New CPU x9950 Cant Boot/POST Stuck on Code 62

Hi

I just swappd out a 7950x for a 9950x today, and have installed the a latest BIOS etc and reset all profile settings to default (I even used clear CMOS, and did a fresh Easy BIOS installation via USB).

The motherboard will not boot passed the 62 code. I did upgrade the PCH FW before I swapped for the new CPU.

I have also taken out 1 of my 2 48GB memory DDRs and also swapped the cards around in slots A2 and B2 etc.

Any one got this working - and if so, with which BIOS version ? Thanks.

My Current Settings are

Motherboard : x670E Crosshair Hero (Wifi)

CPU : AMD 9950x

BIOS :Version 2403 ( I also tried with 2204 using the Easy BIOS)

PD Firmware : Version 004

Memory: 2 x DDR5 96GB (2 x 48GB)  Trident Z5 NeoRGB (AMD Expo) 5600MT/s CL40-40-40-89 1.25V UDIMM -  (F5-5600J4040D48GX2-TZ5NR)

PSU is 1200 watt

GPU : 4090 RTX

Just spoken with Support and they dont know whats wrong with it - I recommend  NOT TO BUY a AMD 9950x if you have this motherboard until this is resolved. I tried 3 BIOS versions, all failed at same point using Clear CMOS (as I cant get to the BIOS GUI).

Hi @marcusob72

I've moved your post to ROG Care for the attention of service.

Before progressing - are you able to confirm you've inspected the socket since installing the new CPU? Check for any debris or bent pins, then ensure for even mounting pressure.

Hi @Silent_Scone  - I have just re-inserted the old 7950x and everything is working perfectly now (as I expected it would), this means the chance of a damaged CPU connector is almost zero. This is a bug in the motherboard firmware probably caused by interaction with the DDR5 memory (AMD are always having problems with memory compatibility). Due to the fact not many 9950s have been sold I expect there are many more such bugs out there, and I suspect this is due to the fact not enough testing with 48GB DDRs has been done.

Without checking, it's quite possible the pinout isn't identical. I'm assuming you did inspect the socket?

Can you just confirm/reaffirm that this is happening directly after clearing the CMOS, too? So you're not enabling EXPO/overclocking of any kind?

Hi,

I presume by pinout you mean chip pin layout ? The motherboard supports this as its supports

"AMD Socket AM5 for AMD Ryzen™ 9000 & 8000 & 7000 Series Desktop Processors*"

I cleared the CMOS several times with the CMOS button on the motherboard, and by taking out the CMOS battery from the motherboard. I can confirm this reset CMOS worked, because when I put back in the AMD 7950x (the original CPU) the PC could boot again and checking the BIOS settings showed they were back at the defaults, meaning the CMOS had been reset correctly, as expected, also the Expo/DDR5 overclocking were all back to factory default ie off.

This is obviously a FW/BIOS issue that means the AMD 5 9950x has compatiblility issues with the Crosshair Hero x670E motherboards,  as the board is working perfectly fine before, and also since I returned the 7950x. If the board doesn't boot and gets stuck at code 62 it's not a broken CPU, something is blocking the PCH iniitialization. I removed all PCIe, M.2, SATA, fans etc. from the board, and I have a 1200Watt PSU (so plenty of juice). Nothing was connected to the board when it was failing to boot, except the CPU, AIO and PSU, and it still would not get past boot code 62, and therefore could not get to the BIOS GUI.

I mean that if the socket is some how compromised/damaged, it may not post successfully where as the 7000 series CPU might.

Obviously would mean there would be various other cases of this, I've yet to see any - have you? I'll check with the CS team to see if they're aware of anything, but initialisation issues can point to a CPU issue just as much as anything else.

Hello @marcusob72
Thank you for reaching out to us, and we apologize for any inconvenience caused by the delayed reply.
Since I joined the thread midway, please feel free to correct any missing or misunderstood information.
Could you please confirm if there are no booting issues when installing the 7950x CPU, but after switching to the 9950x, it fails to boot and shows the Q-code 62, even with a minimal setup (only CPU, one RAM module in DIMM_A2, and PSU)? May I ask are there any Q-LED indicators lighting up at the same time?
While updating the BIOS, did you also update all the drivers, including the AMD Chipset, to the latest versions available on the ROG CROSSHAIR X670E HERO Support page?
To further investigate the issue, could you please share an image of the BIOS main page?
Also, if possible, could you provide a detailed record of the hardware connected to the motherboard during the minimal setup and describe the situation when it fails to boot, such as whether the fans are spinning but no display or if the system doesn't power on at all?

Thank you.

I put the AMD 7950x  back in my motherboard and its working 100% again, so this was a problem with the motherboard firmware/BIOS and/or the 9950x.

Here are the answers to your mutliple questions

Could you please confirm if there are no booting issues when installing the 7950x CPU, but after switching to the 9950x, it fails to boot and shows the Q-code 62, even with a minimal setup (only CPU, one RAM module in DIMM_A2, and PSU)?

As I mentioned above I could not get the system to boot (even to reach the BIOS screen) when the 9950x wsa in the moatherboard, the code 62 showed up, and the blue/white light was lit underneath it. Code 62 is PCH services init, and this would not complete. When I put the 750x (original CPU) back in everything worked 1st time, and has contnued to do so since. I tried fitting the 9950x twice, so fitted it once, connected only the PSU and AIO and CPU (removed everything else) and it failed toboot with code 62, then I put back in the 7950x everything worked for 2 days, I then tried the 9950 again it failed in exactly the same way, then I put the 7950 back in and everything is working for a week now.

May I ask are there any Q-LED indicators lighting up at the same time?

Yes the blue LED underneath the LED code on the motherboard lit up.

While updating the BIOS, did you also update all the drivers, including the AMD Chipset, to the latest versions available on the ROG CROSSHAIR X670E HERO Support page?

Yes I upgraded evewrything, the PD Firmware to 1.4, and the BIOS, and the drivers in Windows 10 (before I tried to upgrade to the new 9950x)

To further investigate the issue, could you please share an image of the BIOS main page?

No, because I cant get to the BIOS.

Also, if possible, could you provide a detailed record of the hardware connected to the motherboard during the minimal setup

I already posted this above, but here it is again

Motherboard : x670E Crosshair Hero (Wifi)

CPU : AMD 9950x

BIOS :Version 2403 ( I also tried with 2204 using the Easy BIOS)

PD Firmware : Version 004

Memory: 2 x DDR5 96GB (2 x 48GB)  Trident Z5 NeoRGB (AMD Expo) 5600MT/s CL40-40-40-89 1.25V UDIMM -  (F5-5600J4040D48GX2-TZ5NR)

I tried the memory in slot A2, B2, then took one out and tried A2 only, then swapped the one in A2 with the one I had remover, then tried B2 only, then finally A1 only and then B1 only.

PSU ROG ASUS Thor 1200 Certified 1200W Fully-Modular RGB Power Supply with LiveDash OLED Panel

and describe the situation when it fails to boot, such as whether the fans are spinning but no display or if the system doesn't power on at all?

The system powers on (otherwise I wouldnt be able to see the error code or the LED), the fans all come on, and the A15 memory training completes twice etc., once the code hits 62 the whole things just contnues to be powered but no image appears on the screen (using HDMI cable from the motherboard slot, or using a NVidia RTX 4090 ASUS TUF GPU).

Hello @marcusob72

Thank you for providing the relevant information. We are currently investigating further and confirming with the relevant departments.
In the meantime, we kindly ask for your assistance in confirming the following:
1) In the original post, you mentioned, "I did upgrade the PCH FW before I swapped for the new CPU."
Could you please clarify what you mean by "PCH FW" and provide an explanation or a screenshot?
2) Regarding the Q-code 62 with a blue Q-LED lighting up at the same time, based on the official site, the Q-LED indicators are: CPU [red], DRAM [yellow], VGA [white], Boot Device [yellow green], and there is no blue Q-LED.
Could you please double-check the Q-LED indicator or provide photos or a video?
Please refer to [Motherboard] ASUS motherboard troubleshooting via Q-LED indicators if needed.

3) The currently installed memory (F5-5600J4040D48GX2-TZ5NR) is not listed in the ROG CROSSHAIR X670E HERO memory QVL.
If possible, we recommend testing with other memory listed in the QVL to rule out any potential compatibility issues.
Please refer to [Motherboard] How to query (CPU/memory) QVL List? if needed.

4) Please also confirm the OS and build version.

Thank you.
