Maximus Z790 Hero - Solid White VGA Q-Led and Solid Green Boot Q-LED, No Video Signal

KenoOH
Level 8

Motherboard: ROG Maximus Z790 Hero WiFi6E LGA 1700

Proc: i9 - 14900KF

PSU: Corsair RM1000x 80 Plus Gold

RAM: Corsair Vengeance DDR5 2x32GB, installed in DIMM_A2 and DIMM_B2

SSD: Corsair MP600 Mini 1TB M.2 NVMe PCIe x4 Gen 4 SSD, installed in PCIEX 16(G5)_1 (Note: removed the Hyper Card from PCIEX16(G4)

Using iGPU on motherboard. Plan to install RTX 4080 but waiting until I can get to BIOS settings and install Windows for drivers).

Updated BIOS to 1801 which also updated ME to 16.1.30.2307. Used USB stick that came with the mother board, renamed file using the rename utility, and BIOS updated normally as indicated (flashing blue, extinguished after a few minutes)

When the PC is powered on, ends with VGA Q-LED light stead white and boot Q-LED light stead yellow and Q-Code D6. Using a wired USB keyboard and mouse (Redragon S101 keyboard and M601 mouse). Repeatdly pressing "Delete" does not bring up BIOS settings, monitor reports "No Signal)

Any suggestions for thinks to look at or next troubleshooting steps would be most appreciated.

Update #1: Swapped out the SSD with new one (Western Digital WD_BLACK 2TB NVMe SSD, m.2 2280), same issue

Update #2: Install the 4080 GPU, and VGA Q-LED extinguishes, leaving the yellow Boot Q-LED steady on. Q-Code is now 98. Have tried 3 different keyboards with various combinations of with mouse and without.

With a "standard" plain-Jane graphics card, I now have video. However, system is still not seeing either SSD so the boot light remains steady on.

I have followed the troubleshooting instructions. When there is no keyboard attached, the POST fails with due to "No console input device". But with keyboard and mouse, again, the only issue is neither SSD is seen. After work today I will try to install just one, and I will move it from slot to slot to see if I can get it detected. Also, in the BIOS setting, I can't find the boot order, as I need to enable booting from USB for the initial install of Windows 11 Pro.

Thank you for prompt attention so far, and I'm very satisified with the Z790 and the support. 🙂 Keep making great products and providing great service. 🙂

Hello, @KenoOH

It appears that the i9-14900KF does not support integrated graphics, which could be the reason for the abnormal booting.
The fact that the VGA Q-LED indicator light no longer stays on after installing the 4080GPU suggests that display issues have been resolved.

Regarding the BOOT Q-LED light on and Q-code 98, have you tried booting after removing all external devices, such as the keyboard and mouse?
Please refer to [Motherboard] ASUS motherboard troubleshooting via Q-LED indicators and following the steps provided.
Additionally, please check the section "Test with minimal components, isolating the possible cause" in  [Motherboard] Troubleshooting - No Power/No Boot/No Display.

Thank you.

Yes, a standard graphics card solved the video issue. Still not seeing either ssd

Hello, @KenoOH

If the system can boot but is unable to recognize the HDD or SSD in BIOS, we kindly suggest referring to the guide in [Motherboard] Troubleshooting - Cannot find the hard disk drive or SSD(M.2) after motherboard power... and try enabling [Launch CSM] if needed.

Thank you.
