LAN Problems with ROG STRIX X870E-E and 9800X3D - Massive Packet Loss

I also opened a case (E24110026198-0001), but maybe someone experiences the same problems. My new X870E-E (newest 0606 BIOS) has problems with the internal LAN adapter. Currently it's connected via Gigabit connection, but that  shouldn't cause problems, at least would be very bad if you would have to connect it via 5 Gb/s LAN. It seems to work normally at first, a speed test maxes out my internet connection (1000/500) and ping also is good in speed test. While playing online games, I got massive packet loss issues (while having jumping ping times), competive games are unplayable. When I try to use WiFi or external USB LAN adapter the problems are gone. So I uninstalled the current ASUS LAN driver V1126.16.1121.2023 and let Windows install a driver, which is way older. But with this old driver everything works fine. I can reproduce the problem, when installing new driver again the packet loss problems reappear.

Does someone have similar problems with the new driver? What could that be?

I already had newest driver from this forum. Seems that it worked for me, though. But thanks for you experiences, will look more in detail in the next few days if it really resolved my issues.

ASUS support told me to deactivate EEE (Energy Efficient Ethernet). It seems that this did the trick! Will watch for problems in the next few days, though. After activating EEE again packet loss immediatly appears again. You can also try to deactivate it and see if it works.

Hi,

Good suggestion from ASUS Support.

Historically, this kind of issues (packet/connection loss) was also on Intel Ethernet controllers side for some users, and the workaround was to disable EEE. Intel finally disabled EEE by default on drivers side :

Hi,

Energy Efficient Ethernet (EEE) has been disabled by Intel since 2.1.3.3 WHQL (Windows 11) / 1.1.4.38 WHQL (Windows 10) drivers version :

Wait and see if Realtek will do the same thing on its drivers side.

Hi all,

A couple of pointers to help the team reproduce the problem.

1. Can those experiencing issues please make sure to report behaviour on official BIOS revisions only, not beta BIOS (should be obvious but please take into account)

2. Please check if the issue persists at complete Optimised Defaults (Clear CMOS). No overclocking, including EXPO.

3. Make sure to include all the information requested by @Jiaszzz_ROG.

Thank you!

Hey! Thanks for advice! Unfortunately i tested on 3 different BIOS version stock and OCed and different drivers and it doesn’t matter unfortunately. Whatever i do, packet loss is little better or worse but still not fixed.

Hello @PannDeth

I have updated our private message conversation earlier. Please take a moment to review it at your convenience.
Should there be any updates or changes to your situation, we would appreciate it if you could kindly share the details with us.

Thank you.

I can confirm I am having the same issue as described my everyone else in this thread.

Brand new ROG STRIX X870E-E with 9800X3D. BIOS version 0606.

At first I was experiencing unbearable packet loss on the games I play (namely hunt showdown).

Someone recommended disabling EEE (energy efficient eathernet) and the packet loss has disappeared.

ASUS, please do your thing and sort this out when you can, other people may not realise this and will get very unhappy 🙂

Hello @jamesseabrook67

Thank you for joining the discussion.
As you mentioned, disabling Energy Efficient Ethernet is the current solution we recommend to address this issue. The EEE feature is designed to reduce power consumption for Ethernet devices. However, if enabling it affects network stability (e.g., during high-traffic or latency-sensitive applications like gaming or video streaming), disabling it can help mitigate these effects.
We suggest continuing to observe the system's performance with this adjustment.

Thank you.

I am having the same issue as described by others in this thread.

My motherboard (X870E Hero) has 2 ethernet ports, and only the Realtek 5gbe port is having the issue. The intel 2.5gbe port is fine.

I can confirm that disabling Energy Efficient Ethernet does indeed fix the problem.

- ROG CROSSHAIR X870E HERO, BIOS version 0706, also tried version 0606

- 9800X3D, EVGA 3090 FTW3 Ultra, G.SKILL Trident Z5 Neo RGB (F5-6000J3038F16GX2-TZ5NR), EVGA 1000 T2 power supply

- UniFi Dream Machine Special Edition, fiber 1000/1000

- Windows 11 Pro, version 24H2, build 26100.2605

- Tried driver versions 1126.19.704.2024, 1126.21.901.2024

- Happens almost instantly when playing a game, browsing internet, watching video, etc. Same as everyone else.

- Confirming packet loss with "packetlosstest.com", PingPlotter software, playing games, and browsing internet

- Everything is on stock settings. No overclocking, EXPO, etc.

I have the same problem with the same hardware (X870E Crosshair Hero + 9800X3D). I have installed the old windows driver. Now it works. I only have 0.7% packet loss now.

Hello @Chruncherpunk

Thank you for reaching out to us.
Based on your description, it seems the issue has slightly improved. We recommend continuing to use the system and monitoring its behavior for further observations.

However, if you still have concerns, we kindly suggest starting a new discussion thread due to the differences in models, which may help avoid confusion in content or context. (For reference, the X870E HERO has two LAN ports, while the X870E-E has only one.)
In the new thread, please include details such as the currently connected LAN port, driver version, and whether disabling Energy-Efficient Ethernet in Device Manager > Realtek PCIe 5GbE Family Controller Properties > Energy-Efficient Ethernet resolves the issue, particularly if you are using the Realtek 5Gb Ethernet port.
