I can't seem to get Wake on Lan (WoL) to work when PC is in sleep mode on B650E-I motherboard

Hi all,

I've got a B650E-I motherboard that comes with an Intel 2.5 GBPS ethernet chipset I225-V - I've tried both the latest Asus drivers and newer Intel drivers directly from intel's website, with all UEFI/Windows settings set to enable Wake on Lan

I've tried 4 different apps to wake my pc from a MacBook that is directly connected to the pc with an ethernet cable (same subnet of 255.255.0.0 with similar static IP addresses) - this works on my other mini PC but for some reason not on the B650E-I motherboard built-in adapter??

• Device Properties > NIC > Advanced > Wake on Lan is checked, in Power Management all 3 options are checked (including magic packet)
• Static IP set under subnet 255.255.0.0
• UEFI > Advanced > AFM > Power on by PCI-E (Wake on Lan) is set to enabled
• UEFI > Advanced > Network Stack > Enabled (both IPv4 PXE support and IPv6 PXE support)
• Hibernation/Hybrid/Fast startup is disabled
• S3 sleep is enabled
• Wake up ports tried are 0, 7, 9, 13, 4343 but none of them make a difference, the Mac address is correct and I've triple checked this

I'm not sure what else I can do here, does anyone else have any suggestions on how to get this to work? I've also tried resetting the bios, there's nothing special set there, I had it on ECO mode but I've disabled that too and tried it, no difference, what am I missing here?

I can see the packet being sent as the ethernet port flashes when I hit "send wake up magic packet" so it is being sent, but I think it is powered off in sleep as I can't detect is using a network scan, so perhaps it's not truly being powered on whilst in sleep mode? I've also tried unchecking "Allow Windows to put this device to sleep to save power" in the Power Management of NIC properties too

The motherboard is advertised as Wake on Lan compatible but it does not work at all, even when it's switched off.

Do you have PCI-E power savings enabled in UEFI? I have to have that enabled to  get WOWL to work

Where is this setting exactly? I don't recall seeing it, you enable the power savings to get it to work? The only power saving I can find is above the Power on from PCI-E option in Advanced > AFM  - is this the one? 

If I enable this it disables Native ASM and changes CPU PCIE ASPM Mode Control from Auto to L1 Entry and turns off USB power delivery in Soft Off state (S5) 

I tried this and it doesn't seem to work either 😞

What UEFI version and which driver version are you using? I think this intel chipset has a lot of bugs, and it may be uefi/driver combination related

Could you please confirm if your current BIOS is updated to the latest version, 3035, released on September 12, 2024?

Based on your description, we recommend ensuring that the selected options in Power Management align with the instructions in the [Motherboard] How to set and enable WOL (Wake On LAN) function in BIOS, as shown in the image:

If needed, we suggest updating the LAN driver, the BIOS and clearing CMOS, then follow the steps outlined in the above FAQ to adjust the settings and check if the wake function works.
Additionally, we’re unsure if you're using ASUS routers, but please also refer to the relevant FAQ [Wireless Router] How to set up Wake on LAN(WOL)? to verify your settings.

Hello, I updated the LAN driver to the latest one, the bios is 3035, and I cleared CMOS by shorting the 2 pins, still it is not waking up, I am not sure what else to do, it must be something issue with the Intel Ethernet Adapter (3) I225-V or a bug in the bios

I'm connecting directly from one laptop to the remote pc using direct ethernet cable and lan scanner shows that it is pinging when laptop is on and I tried wake on lan listener tool and it shows the packet is received when pc is awake, so it is when it's in sleep that it must not be powered on - something is wrong with bios UEFI or intel driver, do you have some new firmware for the intel i225v?

What else can I do to fix this? please help as I need Wake on Lan (as advertised by the motherboard)

Regarding the WOL function being ineffective when set to S3 as mentioned in your original context, may I ask if the result is the same when set to S4+S5 or S5?
When set to S3, what is the status of the LAN indicator light on the rear I/O panel of the ROG STRIX B650E-I GAMING WIFI before executing WOL wake-up? Is Fast Startup disabled within the system?

If the issue persists, we kindly request you to follow the steps below to provide a video recording:
1) Start recording: Record the BIOS main page and all manual settings, such as Power On By PCI-E, ErP Ready, or Network Stack.
2) Boot into the system.
3) Confirm the OS version, driver version, and relevant software version within the system.
4) Verify all related settings, such as Device Manager, power management, and router settings.
5) Put the system to sleep and record the status of the LAN lights on the rear panel.
6) Perform WOL and confirm the result.
7) Any additional steps or end the recording.
8 ) Upload the video to cloud storage, and once sharing permissions are set, DM me the link
Please also confirm the brand and model name of the CPU, GPU, RAM (including part number and installed slots), SSD/HDD, and PSU currently installed, so that we can further investigate the issue you've reported.
