d6 error when booting ROG maximus Z790 Hero

derek_asus

Just built a new system, but have not managed to boot further than a d6 error.

Motherboard: ROG MAXIMUS Z790 HERO

CPU: Intel i7-13700KF

DRAM: Corsair DDR5 64GB 6400MHz

Monitor connected to HDMI port on motherboard.

Got the error, then updated BIOS, tried different monitors/HDMI cables (both working on previous system).

Have reset CMOS, and cycled a few times.

I see that others here have been experiencing the same problem.

Suggestion welcome.

Hi @derek_asus

Do you have a discrete GPU you can try or another monitor?

When using USB Flashback, are you sure the UEFI updated successfully and it flashed continuously for a few minutes?

I don't have a GPU.

Will double-check with another monitor.

The BIOS led certainly flashed for several minutes. How do I check that the UEFI updated successfully.  The numeric boot sequence values look the same; many are too fast to see.

Unplugged monitor from adjacent system, plugged into ROG system, also using different cable.

No change of behavior.

I found an old Nvidia  Quadro 2000 card and plugged it in.  Some success, I can now get to the BIOS; exiting the BIOS eventually brings me back to the BIOS again

"The VGA card is not supported by the UEFI driver"

Not a surprising message, the card must be 10+ years old.

What can I change in the BIOS to support a monitor connected to the board's HDMI port?

Depends on what's causing the issue.

Access the System Agent (SA) Configuration:

  • Go to the Advanced tab.
  • Select System Agent (SA) Configuration/System Agent Configuration > Graphics Configuration. Set the primary display option and enable iGPU Multi Monitor if available.

Thanks for such prompt replies.

The only options on the Advanced/System Agent (SA) Configuration page are:

VT-d, Control Iommu Pre-boot Behavior, Memory Configuration, VMD Setup menu, PCI Express Configuration

The BIOS version is 2402 x64

Build date 06/24/2024

EC version MBEC-RPL-0142

The getting past BIOS issue is solved: I did not have a UEFI disk attached 😐

Hello, @derek_asus

We apologize for missing the first opportunity to provide troubleshooting advice.
If you encounter a Q-code next time, we recommend referring to the [Motherboard] Common Q-CODE (Error CODE) and Troubleshooting guide or the "Q-Code table" section in the ROG MAXIMUS Z790 HERO User’s Manual to further identify the error codes occurring during the POST process.
In the FAQ link, you can see that when an Intel platform motherboard displays Q-code "d6," it indicates a "VGA error," which in your case means an issue with the display signal output.

Thank you.

Due to the ongoing regional holidays, my responses may be slightly delayed.
Thank you in advance for your patience 🙂

If the issue persists only when using the iGPU, consider remounting the CPU and cooler whilst ensuring consistent mounting pressure.

If using a contact frame, reinstall the stock retention bracket and see if the issue persists. I've moved the thread to ROG Care for the attention of service.

A surprising suggestion, but why not.

Took cooler off, took cpu out, cleaned off paste, replaced cpu, restarted, same behavior.

Added paste + cooler, screwed down securely, installed aged gpu, restarted.

When connected to the HDMI port, the lcd display now stops with a 98: Console input device connect.

When connected via display port on the aged GPU, can boot from a memory stick, as previously and keyboard works; lcd displays 31

I have gone through all the BIOS utility options, and cannot find anything relating to display options.

I see that others have experienced d6 problems.  Is there a BIOS update in the works?

Do you know of anyone using the HDMI port on the motherboard, rather than a GPU card?
