Hi !
I just built an almost brand new PC using the crosshair x870e hero and a 9800x3d. Only parts i carried over were the nvme ssd's and the GPU (until the 50 series come out).
this is my 4th ROG board in 12 years, loved them all, however this is the first time i am noticing a coil whine noise and sometimes a noise similar to what hard drives used to make (system has no HDD's)
My previous system was whisper quite even under heavy load i barely heard anything.
Before i finished building this new PC, I assembled everything just on the MB box, flashed bios, installed windows, ran a few stress tests...etc Even then i noticed this clicking noise that it was making figured it was just some cable potentially being in the way, but after having built the full system in the case it didn't go away.
I tried to eliminate everything and so far the only option i am coming to is the motherboard:
- I disabled all fans temporarily: noise didnt go away
- even disconnected GPU entirely: noise didn't go away
- swapped in my old PSU from the previous system, noise didn't go away.
- played around with ram, swapped them around, went down to dual or even single channel, no change
So i am wondering with only the MB left is that even an option ? the system is not overclocked at all and pretty much runs at stock. the noise is present almost immediately after bootup, and it doesn't seem to matter whether whether the system is under load or just idling.
is there anything i could potentially try or potentially the MB is defective since i can't think of anything else at this point.

Hello @Pegabeee
Thank you for reaching out to us.
Based on your description, the unusual noise appears to occur sporadically. Could you please clarify the specific scenarios in which it typically arises? For example, does it happen under heavy load, when launching certain applications, or consistently about 10 minutes after startup regardless of usage conditions?
We also recommend referring to the relevant guide [Graphic card] Sometimes there is a slight high-frequency noise, and continuing to monitor the situations in which it occurs, as well as any variations with changes in usage load.
Thank you.

Hi @Jiaszzz_ROG
Thank you for your reply.
I definitely cannot be the GPU unfortunately as I mentioned above, at one point i removed the GPU entirely and the noise didnt disappear. the GPU is also 3 years old, saved from my previous system where it was whisper quite.
At this point the noise is constant, more of a clicking HDD like noise (the system has no mechanical HDD's, only nvme SSD's). The noise starts immediately as I power up the system. At this point I'm 99% sure it is related to the motherboard , a brand new CROSSHAIR X870E HERO as I took these steps to try to eliminate the source:
- Disconnect the GPU (noise remains)
- Swapped in my old PSU that worked flawlessly for the past 4 years (noise remains)
- Played around with the ram configuration from quad to dual to single channel, swapping the individual sticks multiple times (noise remains)
- Shut down all fans (noise remains)
As i mentioned before, I also tested the setup outside of the case, so it's definitely not an interference with it.
The noise is present constantly, load levels don't seem to impact it all.
