Hi,
I have an ROG MAXIMUS Z790 FORMULA motherboard and Core i9-14900 CPU, and I updated the BIOS to the latest version. After the update, while playing games or using the computer, it would freeze and restart itself immediately after logging in. After many attempts, the computer is now completely unable to boot. There are no signs that the mouse or keyboard are working, and there is no display—only the fans and lights are on. A message indicates on livedash that I need to check the CPU unit. What do you suggest as a solution?
I cannot revert to the previous BIOS version even using the USB BIOS Flashback; it says the update did not complete. I also tried resetting the CMOS battery, but it did not work either.

Hello everyone, I would like to inform you that the problem was due to the processor, which was affected by the latest issue from Intel. Some 13th and 14th generation processors had a microcode error due to high voltage. If you are still experiencing problems, please contact the place where you purchased the processor. If you have a warranty, they will replace it for you after testing. Thank you all!

Hello, @lilKING
According to the official website for the ROG MAXIMUS Z690 FORMULA, the latest BIOS version is 3701, released on July 17, 2024, and the 1402 BIOS version is not listed on the official site.
Could you please confirm the exact model of your motherboard?
If it is indeed the ROG MAXIMUS Z690 FORMULA, the BIOS versions that support the i9-14900 CPU are 2703 and later.
We recommend updating to BIOS version 2703 or later and clearing CMOS before checking again.
Kindly refer to [Motherboard] How to update BIOS of the motherboard? (Including different generation CPUs) for related guidance.
Thank you.

I have the same problem with my z790 formula. It worked for a few days after the 1402 bios update before it suddenly froze and reset itself while I was watching a YouTube video. After that, the pc doesn't boot up anymore, getting stuck at Qcode 71. Tried flashing back to the earlier bios(1301) doesn't work either; the flashback was successful, but the same problem persists.
CPU: i9-14900K
Motherboard : Asus ROG Z790 Formula
RAM : G Skill Trident Z5 RGB White 6400MHz(2x16GB) CL32

My situation is the same, and I have not found a solution yet, but I am still searching. I think it might be because of the processor. Some 13th and 14th generation processors were affected by an instability issue that caused them to malfunction. I will let you know if I find anything.

Hello, @lilKING
Could you please let us know the version of the BIOS before updating to 1402?
Based on your description, does the automatic restart only occur during specific games, does it not happen during idle times or other usage scenarios?
Have you checked for potential system or CPU overheating issues?
We recommend inspecting the CPU socket for any bent pins, ensuring that thermal paste is applied correctly, and checking the CPU fan installation.
If the issue persists, please provide a complete video showing the automatic restart and the CPU indicator light during the game, along with a summary of your troubleshooting steps, for us to better understand the scenario.
And also share with the following information:
- the current BIOS version and the images of manually adjusting items in BIOS, or whether it is the default
- the brand and model name of the CPU, GPU, RAM (part number and installed slots as well), SSD/HDD, and PSU currently installed
- are there any extensions or adapters used to connect any devices, such as GPU or SSD?
- the OS version and OS build
- the circumstances and frequency of the problem
Thank you.

I managed to get hold of another 14th gen cpu. It managed to boot with that cpu. When i placed back my original cpu, it got stuck at cpu code 71(check cpu) again. Looks like the CPU failed and I have to return it to Intel for a replacement.

Yes, I think the processor unit was damaged due to this technical defect from Intel. If you have a warranty, send it to the company, perhaps it will be replaced.

Hello @ROG0178 ,
Regarding the situation you describe, we recommend that you refer to this discussion thread:

Thank you.

The version of the BIOS before updating to 1402 is 1301.
But I think the reason is that some PC with intel's 13th and 14th Gen CPU (Raptor Lake and Raptor Lake refresh) are prey to a microcode bug. Units with a TDP of 65W can run excessive voltage under some conditions. This can cause crashes & BSODs during idle or gaming en browsing.
