So I have a MAXIMUS V GENE baseboard running American Megatrends Inc. 1903 (19/08/2013) as BIOS, yep, 2013.
I don't understand this BIOS and I'm starting to get really frustrated because I can't find any manual on it. (the one I found on the asus website, under my motherboard's name, shows a completly different UI, with different options, i tried searching a manual of the BIOS itself but nothing shows up)
My pc has and always has had windows installed, but now I want to try running MX Linux on it through a live usb.
The only problem is that when I boot up the usb and click to launch the OS, it gets stuck trying to populate my hardware "waiting for /dev to be fully populated" I assume that it can't read something about my PC but I don't know what. I messed around with the BIOS and was able to boot the OS once, but it started with a wierd resolution and crashed before the desktop could fully load.
I'm not sure if the problem comes from the BIOS, I'm trying many different things, one of them is coming here to ask you guys how the hell does this BIOS work? where can I get more info on it? is it safe to upgrade my BIOS or change it to a simpler one? (I hate this xtreme tweaking wumbo jumbo, i don't care about it, I just want to be able to run both Linux and Windows on my machine), maybe some tweak option is messing with the hardware making it hard for linux to boot? Or maybe it's just and outdated BIOS?
If there's any extra information I could provide so you can help me just ask!
Here's a link detailing my problem: https://forum.mxlinux.org/viewtopic.php?t=81182

Hello, @jamesjonas
Thank you for your inquiry.
We recommend installing the Windows OS for optimal software and hardware compatibility.
Regarding BIOS, each model, version, and hardware configuration can result in slight differences in BIOS functions.
May I ask if you are referring to the UI differences between legacy BIOS and UEFI BIOS?
You can check the BIOS mode by pressing "Win + R" and input "msinfo32."
Meanwhile, kindly refer to Common BIOS settings for ASUS Motherboards if needed.
Thank you.

Hi @jamesjonas , I looked at your linux board post, the BIOS screenshot you posted on that board seems to represent the Legacy BIOS mode is turned ON. In this mode, the UEFI BIOS is disabled and the UEFI features are not going to work. I am not a Linux person but I have seen and heard that linux prefers a UEFI BIOS. Can you please post a screenshot of your BOOT menu here? You may have CSM Enabled. If your BIOS has this CSM option, you can try setting it to DISABLED and your BIOS will then look very different when you enter into it. Then you have enabled UEFI BIOS mode on your board and can give another try to load On-The-Go Linux using your USB stick.
I hope this information helps you make progress. Good luck!
