BSOD and Frequent Disconnections of the NVMe SSD

Hello,

I recently built a new PC, with all new components except for the GPU. Here is my setup:

  • CPU: AMD Ryzen 9 9800X3D
  • AIO: Lumen S24 RGB V2
  • Motherboard: ROG STRIX X870-I GAMING WIFI
  • GPU: GeForce GTX 1080 GAMING X+ 8G
  • RAM: Kingston DDR5 FURY Beast 2x32GB 6400 MHz (model: KF564C32BBEK2-64)
  • PSU: Corsair SF850L
  • NVMe 1 (M2_1): Crucial T705 2TB
  • NVMe 2 (M2_2): Western Digital Black SSD SN770 2TB
  • Case: Fractal ERA 2

1. GPU Issue:

From the first boot, no video signal was output by the GPU. I had to connect the monitor directly to the motherboard’s HDMI port to access the BIOS. I then installed Windows 11 in this configuration. After that, the video signal returned via the GPU's DisplayPort, but only within Windows. The BIOS still wouldn't display through the GPU. This issue was resolved by updating all drivers (via Asus DriverHub), disabling Fast Boot in the BIOS, and enabling Launch CSM.

2. RAM (EXPO) Issue:

When the EXPO mode is enabled, the Crucial T705 on M.2_1 randomly disappears from the BIOS. I had to disable EXPO for everything to work properly, although it's disappointing because I can’t use the RAM to its full potential (this kit is on the motherboard's QVL list).

3. BSOD and NVMe SSD Disconnection Issue:

I regularly encounter BSODs. After a restart, the Crucial T705 (M2_1) is no longer recognized. I have to power off the PC completely and then turn it back on for the disk to be detected again. Here are some observations after several tests:

  • In Gen 5 mode (M.2 Link Mode on Auto), the SSD heats up quickly, easily exceeding 65°C, and the system shows lag symptoms (audio stuttering, etc.).
  • In Gen 4 mode (M.2 Link Mode forced to Gen 4), disconnections are less frequent but still occur.
  • When EXPO mode is enabled, the frequency of the issue increases, and booting Windows from the disk becomes difficult.
  • The more the PC is stressed (gaming, benchmarking, etc.), the faster the BSODs occur.
  • Disabling "Above 4G Decoding" did not resolve the issue.

Additional Details:

  • The only peripherals connected are a Corsair keyboard and mouse.
  • All drivers provided by Asus have been installed.
  • The BIOS has been updated to the latest version (0825).
  • The firmware of the Crucial T705 has been updated.

Thank you in advance for your help in resolving these issues.

Hello @Arzatres

Thank you for joining the discussion thread and providing follow-up updates.
However, based on the specifications you initially shared when joining the conversation, it seems that the details regarding the installed SSD or HDD, including their specifications and which slots they are connected to on the motherboard, were not mentioned.
Could you kindly provide more detailed information? Additionally, kindly refer to the initial inquiries in this thread, such as conducting isolated tests with specific SSDs, cross-testing different slots, and recording videos as requested steps, to help us better understand your situation.
As mentioned in my earlier response, we conducted verification using the same hardware specifications as Guibsiguibs, which failed to replicate the issue of the Crucial T705 2TB SSD being unrecognized. This also includes sharing the video recordings of our tests.
If you are encountering a similar issue, we kindly request you provide more detailed information to assist us in further clarifying or validating the problem.

Thank you.

Hello @Jiaszzz_ROG,

I've noticed that the chipset fan is often not detected in the BIOS. In fact, in the latest video I shared in this topic, it wasn't detected at all.

I'm not sure if this could be related to the NVMe errors I've encountered, but I wanted to bring it to your attention nonetheless. Are you aware of any issues regarding this?

Thanks in advance for your insights!

Hey There,

These are the specs:

  • CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 9700X
  • AIO: Thermalright Mjolnir Vision 360
  • Motherboard: ROG STRIX X870-A GAMING WIFI
  • GPU: ROG Strix White OC GeForce RTX3080 10GB
  • RAM: G.Skill Trident Z5 Royal Neo RGB 32 GB (2 x 16 GB) DDR5-6400 CL30 Memory
  • PSU: Antex NEO 850
  • NVMe 1 (M2_1): Crucial T705 2TB
  • NVMe 2 (M2_4): Crucial P3 Plus 4 TB M.2-2280 PCIe 4.0 X4 NVME Solid State Drive
  • Case: APNX Creator C1

I am having the exact same issue with my T705 SSD and Asus mobo with frequent BSOD and drive not showing in BIOS.

What was the RMA process with crucial like and did this resolve the problem?

Cheers

Hey there,

I'm still waiting for the replacement part, and to make things worse, I had to cover the shipping costs myself... Not exactly great customer service.

The more I read the negative reviews on Amazon—nearly 10% of customers having the exact same issue as us—the more convinced I am that this is a serious structural problem with the SSD.

If the replacement drive doesn't fix the issue, I’m seriously considering reaching out to others in the same situation and looking into the possibility of a class action lawsuit.

I'll update once I receive and test the replacement. Hope we can get some clarity on this soon.

Hi All,

I have a same or very similar issue, no BSOD, but when the system is warm, is is not always detecting the SSD, usually at cold startup it is working, but when I restart after a CPU/GPU heavy application or game usually the M2 drive is not detected.

I can reinforce the observation, with EXFO off, it seems not happening so often, but it is still happen sometimes.

These are my specs:

  • CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D
  • AIO: Fractal Design Lumen S28 V2
  • Motherboard: ROG STRIX X870-A GAMING WIFI
  • GPU: ProArt GeForce RTX 4080 16GB OC Edition GDDR6X
  • RAM: KINGSTON FURY 64GB Beast EXPO DDR5 6000MHz CL30 KIT
  • PSU: Corsair SF1000 (2024)
  • NVMe (M2_1): Samsung 990 PRO 2TB
  • HDD: Seagate BarraCuda Laptop 2TB
  • Case: Fractal Design Era 2

Hello,

it's time for little update :

I still have no updates regarding my RMA. The only thing I know is that my faulty SSD arrived at Crucial’s facility on Monday, January 27. I reached out to customer service for an update on my case, and here’s their response—brace yourselves, Crucial is at its best:

"We would like to inform you that due to unforeseen circumstances in our current operations, we are unable to process your replacement order at this time. Our team is diligently working to resolve this issue and find an appropriate solution.

At the moment, we do not have a timeframe to provide, but as soon as the issue is resolved, we will proceed with your request or inform you of the next steps.

Once again, we sincerely apologize for this inconvenience and appreciate your understanding."

Either Crucial is going through a rough patch, or we’ve really put our finger on something ...

I’ll keep you all updated as this saga unfolds.

Hi everyone,

thank you @Guibsiguibs for the update. Since the last time that I posted here I’ve experienced a few bsods which I was unable to resolve. Since the RMA process would likely take a whole month, I have decided that I will try to purchase another crucial ssd (the same I had before). Since I installed the new ssd I have not gotten a single bsod even with expo enabled. Also looking around I found out that about 10% of all Crucial t705 ssd are faulty which could be the reason why they are unable to provide you with a replacement.

Update on the Situation

I’ve received my replacement SSD, and it has been running in my PC for the past 24 hours. I played some games and ran about ten tests on CrystalDiskMark—so far, no issues at all.

That being said, this drive runs really hot. I’ve seen temperatures reach up to 79°C using the built-in cooling solution on my Asus motherboard, which is far from ideal. I was able to reduce the heat by using FanControl to adjust a custom curve for the small NVMe fan.

However, as previously mentioned, it is impossible to control this fan via the BIOS or any Asus software, which is quite frustrating.

Anyway, I’ll keep you all posted. I’m setting a 30-day reminder, and if I encounter no issues by then, I’ll come back for a final update.
