BSOD and Frequent Disconnections of the NVMe SSD

Guibsiguibs

Hello,

I recently built a new PC, with all new components except for the GPU. Here is my setup:

  • CPU: AMD Ryzen 9 9800X3D
  • AIO: Lumen S24 RGB V2
  • Motherboard: ROG STRIX X870-I GAMING WIFI
  • GPU: GeForce GTX 1080 GAMING X+ 8G
  • RAM: Kingston DDR5 FURY Beast 2x32GB 6400 MHz (model: KF564C32BBEK2-64)
  • PSU: Corsair SF850L
  • NVMe 1 (M2_1): Crucial T705 2TB
  • NVMe 2 (M2_2): Western Digital Black SSD SN770 2TB
  • Case: Fractal ERA 2

1. GPU Issue:

From the first boot, no video signal was output by the GPU. I had to connect the monitor directly to the motherboard’s HDMI port to access the BIOS. I then installed Windows 11 in this configuration. After that, the video signal returned via the GPU's DisplayPort, but only within Windows. The BIOS still wouldn't display through the GPU. This issue was resolved by updating all drivers (via Asus DriverHub), disabling Fast Boot in the BIOS, and enabling Launch CSM.

2. RAM (EXPO) Issue:

When the EXPO mode is enabled, the Crucial T705 on M.2_1 randomly disappears from the BIOS. I had to disable EXPO for everything to work properly, although it's disappointing because I can’t use the RAM to its full potential (this kit is on the motherboard's QVL list).

3. BSOD and NVMe SSD Disconnection Issue:

I regularly encounter BSODs. After a restart, the Crucial T705 (M2_1) is no longer recognized. I have to power off the PC completely and then turn it back on for the disk to be detected again. Here are some observations after several tests:

  • In Gen 5 mode (M.2 Link Mode on Auto), the SSD heats up quickly, easily exceeding 65°C, and the system shows lag symptoms (audio stuttering, etc.).
  • In Gen 4 mode (M.2 Link Mode forced to Gen 4), disconnections are less frequent but still occur.
  • When EXPO mode is enabled, the frequency of the issue increases, and booting Windows from the disk becomes difficult.
  • The more the PC is stressed (gaming, benchmarking, etc.), the faster the BSODs occur.
  • Disabling "Above 4G Decoding" did not resolve the issue.

Additional Details:

  • The only peripherals connected are a Corsair keyboard and mouse.
  • All drivers provided by Asus have been installed.
  • The BIOS has been updated to the latest version (0825).
  • The firmware of the Crucial T705 has been updated.

Thank you in advance for your help in resolving these issues.

Hello @Guibsiguibs

We appreciate your prompt response and the detailed information you have shared. At the same time, we apologize for any inconvenience caused by the forum's automatic content moderation system. If you need assistance removing duplicate comments, please let me know.

Could you kindly confirm the following:
- In the two videos showing T705 BSOD on M.2_1 and T705 BSOD on M.2_2, what was the M.2 Link Mode setting in the BIOS at the moment?
- When only the Crucial T705 2TB is installed in the M.2_1 slot, if you manually set the M.2 Link Mode to [Gen 5] and do not enable the EXPO setting, does the issue described in issue 3 still occur?
Jiaszzz_ROG_0-1736232514275.png
- Is the current OS installed on the Crucial T705 2TB?
Could you also share the firmware version of the Crucial T705 2TB, the driver version, the OS version, and the build number?

If possible, we kindly ask you to perform the following steps and record a new video with only the Crucial T705 2TB installed in the M.2_1 slot:
1) Begin recording and show the connection status of all hardware on the motherboard, including the number of fans, SSD installation location, and their conditions.
2) Clear CMOS, disable Fast Boot, enable CSM in the BIOS, and save the settings and reboot into the system. (EXPO is not enabled)
3) Enable real-time temperature monitoring for the CPU and GPU within the system. Then, run CrystalDiskMark or a resource-intensive game.
4) BSOD, auto shut down, and restart occurs, followed by the Crucial T705 2TB not being recognized in the BIOS after the restart.
5) After powering off and restarting again, demonstrate whether the Crucial T705 2TB can once again be recognized in both the BIOS and the OS. Then, end the recording.

We have shared all the information in your case with the relevant department for further consultation and will keep you updated here with any progress or developments.

Thank you.

Hello @Jiaszzz_ROG,

Thank you for your assistance and for addressing the forum's content moderation system. Yes, I would appreciate it if you could delete the duplicate posts.

Regarding your questions:

  • M.2 Link Mode in the videos:
In the videos showing the BSODs, the M.2 Link Mode was set to "Auto."

  • M.2 Link Mode set to [Gen 5] test:
I just performed the test with the Crucial T705 2TB installed in M.2_1, M.2 Link Mode manually set to [Gen 5], and EXPO disabled. Unfortunately, the BSODs still occur.
Note: I noticed that the chipset fan is not always detected in the BIOS.

  • OS installed on the Crucial T705 2TB:
Yes, the operating system (Windows 11) is installed on the Crucial T705 2TB.

  • Firmware, driver version, OS version, and build number:
    Here is the requested information:

    • Firmware: PACR5111
    • Driver version: 10.0.26100.2454

Additional update:
In parallel, I have been in contact with Crucial’s customer support. After discussing the issues and sharing my findings, they approved a warranty activation and product exchange. If this seems reasonable to you and there are no further tests to perform, I plan to return the defective drive soon.

Thank you for your continued support. Please let me know if there’s anything else I can do to assist with your investigation.

Hello @Guibsiguibs

Thank you once again for providing a more detailed record of the situation.
Based on the video, we have not identified any abnormal conditions, including temperature or parameter peaks.
Additionally, when testing with the same equipment internally, our Crucial T705 2TB did not encounter the issue you described.

It is possible that there may be individual hardware variations. Given that you have already sought assistance from the manufacturer, we suggest continuing to monitor the situation after receiving the replacement SSD.
If you encounter any further difficulties or have additional concerns, please do not hesitate to let us know.

Thank you.

Hello @Jiaszzz_ROG

I found this thread and I thought I will share my situation. Basically I’m experiencing the same issue of the same ssd disconnecting and not being recognized after boot. Only when I turn off the PC and turn it back on will it get detected again.

My setup:

CPU - Ryzen 7 9800X3D
MOBO- Asus Rog Strix X870E-E Gaming WiFi
GPU - Gigabyte RTX 4080Super gaming oc 16g
Ram - Kingston FURY Beast Black RGB EXPO, 2x32GB, 6000 MHz, DDR5
Aio- NZXT Kraken 360 ELITE RGB
PSU - ASUS ROG THOR 1000W Platinum II

OS - Windows 11 pro

For me the issue mostly occurs when I’m trying to install large programs like games (last BSOD was when I attempted to install Apex Legends via Steam) or shortly after the installation. Similarly BSODs also may occur when idling or under light load (e.g. YouTube, browsing on Chrome etc.), however never under heavier load like playing games (POE2, LOL, Apex Legends, Marvel Rivals). Before the BSOD happens some audio issues may also occur like crackling or skipping.

At this point I tried everything I know from formatting the drive, reinstalling windows, trying out different power settings in windows, enabling EXPO, CMOS reset etc.

Hi @Arzatres ,

I’ve been experiencing the same small audio glitches right before the issue, just like you. I also noticed someone mentioning similar instability in the Amazon comments, and I’m a bit concerned because I read about someone having the same issue even after replacing the SSD.

I’m actually waiting for a new T705 to arrive, and I’m hoping it’ll solve the problem. I’ll post update once I’ve had the chance to test it.

Hello @Guibsiguibs and @Jiaszzz_ROG

Yesterday I replaced the standard windows ssd drivers with the drivers from Crucial. Currently I have expo off but it seems stable. Did multiple restarts and no issues booting or recognizing the ssd. Also I did not experience any bsods since and the audio glitches are gone too.

Besides that I also changed the power settings on the pc by following the troubleshooting instructions by Crucial.

Hope this helps, should I stop giving updates that means my issues are gone permanently.

Hey @Arzatres ,

Thanks for updating us on your situation.

I haven’t received my new SSD yet, but if I still run into issues once it arrives, I’ll definitely try what you did.

Hope your system stays stable 🤞

Hello @Guibsiguibs and @Jiaszzz_ROG

Just when I thought I was finally free from my issues my system got a bsod. The last thing that comes to my mind is to send back the ssd or maybe wait for a bios update. Would be great to know if Asus is aware of this issue and is coming up with an update to potentially try to fix it if it is an issue with the bios at all. Anyhow please keep us updated when your new ssd arrives.

Hope it will be soon 🤞
