ASUS X670E-E & PCI-E Devices Causing Audio Static Interference from Slot 3

Hi,

I recently put together a PC with the following specs:

• CPU: AMD Ryzen 7800x3d
• Motherboard: ASUS ROG Strix X670E-E
• RAM: G.Skill Trident Z5 Neo RGB, 2x32GB DDR5 6000mhz CL30
• GPU: NVIDIA 4090 FE
• PSU: Corsair RMx 1000w (2021)
• External DAC: Audient Evo 4
• Case: Lian Li Dynamic O11 Evo RGB
• BIOS Settings: Running EXPO 1 for 6000mhz, no other changes

I've been trying to use a multi-functional PCI-E device card that let's me use 10GbE, additional USB-C and NVMe slots. When the device is connected (to PCI-E slot 3) AND transferring data of some sort (like just being plugged in/actually running) I am getting static interference in my audio. I did not have any of these issues using any these same device(s) in my other build. I've confirmed that this does not occur if I have the PCI-E devices plugged into slot 1 or 2. Right now, I have to run an PCI-E extender from slot 2 outside the back of my case and have my devices dangle. This does not seem like the ideal solution.

Here's a list of things I've tried:

• Confirmed I have the latest drivers and BIOs updates (including the BIOS that went live at the end of Jan 2024)
• PCI-E slots 1/2 do not cause static audio with these devices
• Tried powering my external DAC via USB-C & tried the 3.5mm jack on the back of the mobo
• Tried different headphones/IEMs with the DAC and the 3.5mm jack
• Set the PCI-E 3 slot to gen 3
• Confirmed the screws on my mobo are tightened & PSU is touching the case
• Tried with another PCI-E device and while transferring/reading memory - the static occurs again. If plugged in, not being "actively" used, no issues with audio.
• Used a PCI-E extender/riser to bring the device outside the case

All of these have resulted in the static audio noise to occur. It's slightly always there and occasionally pops, definitely some form of interference when the devices are being actively used.

At this point - I am almost convinced it's something with the motherboard but wanted to get others thoughts if they've encountered the same thing. I am within my mobo return/replacement window so this is a route I'm considering.

Could you please confirm if the abnormal sound occurred specifically when installing an additional PCIe expansion device, and if cross-testing slots or removing the PCIe expansion device would resolve the issue?
If that's the case, we recommend cross-testing with different PCIe expansion devices.

Hi,

No worries - hope you had a good Lunar New Year. I mentioned it in my original post that this only occurs when something is installed in PCI-E 3. I've tested it with no PCI-E devices (integrated GPU), the same devices causing issues in PCI-E 3 into PCI-E 1 & 2, and I've had no sound issues. Right now, I have to run a PCI-E extension from slot 2, which is directly next to/somewhat blocks my GPU (4090 FE) fan, and it has to run out of the back of the computer case since the lower portion of my case has 3 case fans. Not convenient or ideal.

According to the ROG STRIX X670E-E GAMING WIFI user manual, PCIeX16_1 and PCIeX16_1 have different specifications from PCIeX16_3, which might explain the differences you've described. 

Please also ensure that you have updated the AMD Chipset Driver to the latest version released on November 10, 2023, version 5.11.02.217.
