Greetings
Im wondering if anyone else have problems with the AMD Ryzen 7 7800X3D, getting hot, while more or less idle in windows?
Mine is arround 65-70*c just sitting there, with my NZXT Kraken X 2x120mm water cooler on.
I think it has something to do with the CPU core frequency just sitting at max 5050mhz at more or less all times?
In windows i can set the max CPU to 95%, then it drops to arround 45-50 with just windows op.
I assume there some setting wrong, perhaps in my bios, but i have no idea what to look for, bios is updated to the latest version, but no differnce.
It shows those clock frequency in bios, nzxt cam, and CPU-Z.
MB: ASUS ROG STRIX B650E-F GAMING WIFI
CPU:AMD Ryzen 7 7800X3D
Any suggestions?

Hi @Impetuz do you see any tasks or processes running in your Windows Task Manager that is making your CPU utilization to go up? While you may not be doing anything if you installed some software or a driver that is not working properly, you will have background task and activity keeping your CPU busy which is the reason your CPU temperatures are high.

Hey @achugh
In the taskmanager, everything looks fine, nothing is sitting and using the CPU, while idle taskmanager is the highest with arround 1-2%.
When i look at the CPU graph in taskmanager, it sits arround 3-4%, but coreclock is 100%/5050mhz (well min is 95%, since i turned MAX CPU down to 95% in windows power manager)
All drivers are updated through Asus Armory Crate, and i did install the latest bios for my Motherboard.
Checked in with 2 friends with AMD´s, one with a R9 and one with a R5, in CPU-Z, those do not sit at full speed, at all time.
Hence why i think it might be something like a MB issue/bios setting, they dont have Asus boards in those 2.

Hi @Impetuz on my PC when it is Idle, my "System Idle Process" shows with 98-99 percent as the usage. See below. Can you post these two pictures where you have SORTED by CPU usage (highest to lowest)?

Hey @achugh , here you go, keep in mind, i have turned the CPU max down 5% in windows.
It in danish, but the top one is System Idle Process

Hi @Impetuz since you set the MAX CPU Usage to 95% via Power Profile, what power profile are you using? Are you using Balanced or High Performance profile?
Also, did you enable C-States in your BIOS to let the CPU go into lower sleep states so that it can conserve power. These C-States is what helps the CPU to get into lower frequencies.

Hey @achugh , im using the balanced profile, and the only thing i have changed was the CPU max to 95%
Ive looked for C-States in the bios, and the only one i can find, is Global Cstate, and that one is set to Auto.
Bios is currently running in default mode.

Hi @Impetuz On https://www.cpuid.com/softwares/hwmonitor.html page where you scroll down to read the FAQ, you will see the following information
1. HWMonitor reports a CPU activity above 100%.Since its version 1.53, HWMonitor reports a processor activity that can exceed 100% in some cases. From this version, HWMonitor computes the CPU usage with the utility counters instead of the time counters, so doing the reported value matches the value in Windows task manager. However, whereas the task manager caps the maximum value to 100%, HWMonitor doesn't and can possibly report a value above 100%, in order to reflect clock increase mechanism such as turbo modes. You can find more information and explanations on the dedicated Microsoft troubleshoot page.
The reason I am sharing it here is because you have used this TIP to restrict your CPU to not really hit 100% of usage. If you want you can increase this 95% to 99% as well. The idea is not to set it to 100% because at 100% Windows Kernel will NOT restrict the load.
The CPU and overall system temperatures can be affected by lots of things besides the cooler and work load. If you think about over clockers using special cooling setups, it is to manage the temperature under load or extreme load.
In your case, do you have sufficient air flow with your case fans? Did you do the standard smoke test to see if the air is flowing in the right direction? If you can also share your case model number and fan details along with which fan is configured in INTAKE direction and which fan is configured in EXHAUST direction that will help us understand your cooling pattern? Do not forget to mention how your PSU is setup and how its fan is running in terms of moving the air as well. Lastly, what fan monitoring software are you using to monitor your fan speeds and how the speeds are controlled i.e. based on CPU temperature or VRM temperature, GPU temperature etc. What is your ambient temperature also?
Your problem may be related to air flow issue. Is the CPU cooler connected to the AIO FAN header on your board? If not, can you set the CPU Fans to run at 100% speed at all times? If you set your AIO fans to run at 100% speed do you see normal temperatures? FYI, I am using Z790 DARK HERO board with ASUS ProArt LC 420 AIO cooler. I have connected the pump to AIO_PUMP and it is by default set to run at 100% speed in BIOS. My radiator fans are connected to the CPU_FAN header and that I have configured in BIOS to run based on CPU temperature.
I am not sure what exact NZXT Kraken Model are you using. I assume it is Kraken 240. I looked at the installation document at https://www.datocms-assets.com/34299/1681978891-cooling_kraken_digital-manual_v3_230221.pdf . Did you connect the M1 connector from the breakout cable to AIO_PUMP or CPU_FAN header? See

Hey @achugh
Im using the Fractal Design Meshify 2, case, with 2 intake fans in the front, one exhaust fan in the rear, and my NZXT Kraken X 240mm is mounted in the top, and its fans are set to exhaust the hot air out the top.
Im using the NZXT Cam to see my fan speeds.
AIO_PUMP or CPU_FAN are correctly connected to the motherboard, i can see the fan speeds in BIOS, but not in NZXT Cam, and they are not connected to the controller, but to the motherboard.
The pump runs at 1948rpm, when computer is idle.
AIO Fans kick on as they are suppose to, when it hits high temps, as they are suppose to, like if i turn my CPU Max to 100%, they kick on, since it then sits at 70 when idle.
I can manualy, in Asus Armory set them to full blast, but that does nothing for the clock speed.
Main issue is the CPU clock speed not falling down/going idle, i dont think getting the heat off is the problem, this is a new setup, but its an upgrade in the same cabinet as i reused it from my old comp. 🙂

Hi @Impetuz what version of Windows 11 are you using? I am assuming Windows 11 due to your screenshot above. There is another post on this forum where the individual is using Windows 11 Insider Preview version 24H2 and is having similar issues. Are you on 23H2 or higher?
