Hi,
So, I'm looking at putting together an AMD threadripper build with the Asus Pro WS WRX90E-SAGE SE motherboard, and I found a section in the manual describing the "recommended" GPU placement in the slots.
I'll be using PCIe riser cables to mount my GPUs elsewhere in the case (three Nvidia RTX 3090s), and would much prefer using slots 4, 5, and 7 for the GPUs, so as not to get in the way of the other, single slot, PCIe cards I will be using. (also, slot 6 is only connected to 8 pcie lanes)
As you can see, the spacing is quite narrow, only allowing for one slot before blocking another.
Anyway, I'm guessing that the "recommended" placement is just a result of how you could possibly fit 4 two slot cards, or 3 three slot cards plugged directly into the board...
However, I have some reservations about whether or not the motherboard will require that one of the GPUs be plugged into slot one, to provide GPU video output. They're all CPU-connected PCIe slots-- none are chipset connected, so it technically shouldn't matter, excepting some design choice or limitations on Asus's end.
Anyone here have the scoop on whether this is indeed a problem? Or experience plugging GPUs into alternative slots? (Or a board available to them that they could test out the theory! 😁🙏)
Finessing 3 three slot cards into a case is no easy feat, but using slots 4, 5, and 7 would make a world of difference.
Thank you 🙂

Hi @spaceman7777
I don't believe there's any limitation that would stop you from leaving G5_1 vacant. However, no real way to confirm given the manual recommendations. It's unfortunately not the type of board or setup that's readily available to test, either.
I've moved this to ROG Care, in the event that the HQ CS team can provide some clarity for you.

Hello @spaceman7777
Thank you for reaching out to us.
After consultation with our technical team, if space permits in your chassis, you may install the GPUs in the PCIEX16(G5) slots 4, 5, and 7 on the Pro WS WRX90E-SAGE SE.
Additionally, we would recommend avoiding using extension cables or adapters when installing the GPU to prevent any potential compatibility or stability issues.
Thank you.
