Asus Maximus XIII Z590 Extreme Safe Boot button not working

Thrakis
Level 7

Hi,

I bought recently (second hand) this motherboard and trying now to install and configure it.

Struggling with "safe boot" button on motherboard not working as intended. It does reset the system but does not apply temporary safe OC parameters. So the only way to get out of situation code 55 situation is the clear CMOS button.

Even the powering off and on during lock, which on X Apex would cause booting in safe mode - does not work.

One scenario the safe boot button worked was while using it in windows - after which system reset with "Safe mode" text in POST screen.

BIOS 2001, but same behavior on previous bios version.

Please instruct or hint how to mitigate/fix it.

Hello, @Thrakis

May I ask if you have made any adjustments to memory overclocking settings in BIOS?
Regarding Q-code 55 on Intel boards indicating a memory issue, we suggest following the steps outlined in [Motherboard] Common Q-CODE(Error CODE) and troubleshooting for issue resolution.
Please ensure that the memory you are using is listed in the ROG Maximus XIII Extreme's QVL and installed in the recommended slots as per the user manual.
Besides updating the BIOS, have you also updated Intel ME to the required 15.0.45.2411V2 version for BIOS 2001?

Additionally, if you have concerns, we recommend reaching out to the place of purchase to verify the condition of the board.

Thank you.

Thank you in advance for your patience 🙂

Hi and thanks for prompt response.

Yes, I am within memory overclocking process. Situation with 55 code was just an example, like code 00 lockout, from which I'm trying to get out by using safe boot (as used to on older apex MB).

BIOS is updated to newest 2001. Using either B2 or B2 and A2 slots.

Weird that "safe button" works as intended while used on functioning system in widows - giving "safe mode" statement at POST, but executes usual reset when used in "locked" scenario.

Best regards

Hello, @Thrakis

According to page 1-24 of the user manual, the safe boot button is designed to force a system restart and enter BIOS safe mode.

Could you please clarify what you mean by "during lock"?
Have you verified if the current Intel ME version aligns with the requirements stated in BIOS 2001?

Thank you.

That's true, it should in addition overwrite temporarily overcloking parameters with default/safe values in order to make the system boot - which it doesn't in this case unless safe boot button is operated on operational system.

In situation when system can't boot with code 49, 55, 00 - which I called lock - the safe boot button causes the system to reset without bringing it into safe mode, so it boots with the same bios overclocking parameters as previously, thus leading to next hanging with 49,55,00 codes. It looks like the only way to get out if it is to use clear bios button.

And yes, both ME and bios are updated to newest versions.
