XG27AQDMG Hdr Bugs in settings and color accuracy - My List

cncz

I posted about this previously when I hadn't been able to really test things with this monitor and didn't get any replies, so I figured I'll post again because this really needs to be fixed. HDR on this monitor currently has 2 significant settings bugs and 2 oddities worth noting.

1. Six Axis calibration is not applied between reboots or when switching modes on the monitor. This results in red tones in HDR being oversaturated in a way that makes orange especially look bad, switching any setting to 49, then back to 50 will immediately fix this, but it is EXTREMELY annoying having to go into this menu every time the monitor sleeps or I boot up my PC.

2. User color temperature settings from SDR mode carry into HDR, this problem is made much worse by the fact that the slider settings appear differently in each mode, meaning getting a similar whitepoint between the SDR and HDR modes is impossible.

3. Not a bug strictly speaking, but at the default HDR contrast setting of 80, only very small highlights reach the actual peak brightness of a given scene, even at very low brightness that the monitor can easily sustain, any "paperwhite" for UI where large parts of the scene are bright for instance will dim dramatically on the monitor compared to the actual brightness that's supposed to be represented, this is fixable by increasing contrast to 100, where the peak in a scene is now represented correctly at ~50% of the screen being that brightness, however this will overbrighten highlights, so it's not ideal.

4. Not sure if it's a bug since uniform brightness seems to just be an aggressive approach to avoiding ABL, but HDR Uniform Brightness is extremely dim to the point that it's effectively useless, as color accuracy is awful when brightness of the content is cranked up enough to where the viewing experience is reasonable.

If any other owner of this monitor can vouch for these bugs being present, it would be appreciated.

Hi @cncz ,

thank you for sharing the issues you’ve encountered with your ROG XG27AQDMG monitor. To help us with further analysis and troubleshooting, we kindly ask you to:

  1. Confirm the current firmware version of your monitor (the latest version will be continuously updated on our official support page).
  2. When the issue occurs, provide a short video or screenshots showing the differences between SDR and HDR mode settings.
  3. Share the product serial number (S/N) via private message so we can escalate the case to our technical team for further review.
  4. Could you also confirm if the same issue occurs when using different connection cables?
  5. Did this issue exist right after you purchased the monitor, or did it appear later?
  6. If you restore the monitor to factory default settings, does the issue still persist?

We will forward your detailed feedback to our engineering team to verify, and we will notify you once further updates are available.

Thank you for your patience and cooperation.

Apologies for the late reply, was busy this week

1. MCM 104, newest version

2. Video of bug: https://youtu.be/fqPMeqCPtlw, look closely at the red section and you should see the sudden change although it's hard to make out on a camera. I've attached pictures showing differences in red & orange saturation (affected by bug #1, doesn't capture well on camera, strawberries are most obvious difference) and yellow saturation (always affected and dull in HDR compared to SDR). Color temperature difference in user mode between SDR and HDR is impossible to capture on my camera since it's extremely slight. Images were captured on a linux PC, but the same issue happens on windows.
