ROG Swift OLED PG27AQDM - Why HDR looks bad

Canaan

Hello!

I allow myself to create a conversation here to reference issues encountered with the HDR mode by users of the ROG Swift OLED PG27AQDM. Mainly the following: unnatural skin color (exaggerated yellowish/greenish tint), overall HDR color reproduction looks unnatural, bright and flat, the rendering lacks sharpness and appears lower res, banding effect for dark shades.
Can Asus fix HDR mode? Its rendering is still very bad even with MCM104 installed.

Here are some pictures that show how bad it is:

Happens regardless of the HDR preset (Gaming, Cinema and Console), Color temp. (6500K and 8200K), of the device (PC, PS5) and output used (DisplayPort, HDMI).
This monitor needs a big update to fix the overall HDR experience. It's a shame for that price.

The problem is there since the MCM102 version and nothing has been done to really improve the HDR mode except increasing the saturation to try to hide the misery.

Hello, all.

Thank you very much for taking the time to provide us with your feedback.
We truly appreciate it, and it will be shared with the relevant teams and departments as a point of reference to enhance our products and reference evaluation.

Thnak you.

May we know the timeframe of if and when the next firmware update is dropping for PG27aqdm? thanks!

Will the relevant team plan to continue improving the screen at the firmware level? I hope there is some news and progress.

Hi to all in this thread;

there is something utterly wrong with the HDR mode, SDR looks really awesome imo; MCM 104 improved brightness significantly in HDR,

but the image still is undersaturated, especially if you compare it with a C2-Tv. I guess we have to wait for future updates.

Hello, @colejsmith

After downloading the v028 firmware from the official website, please refer to the "ASUS FW update tool_SOP" document in the folder for the update process.

Thank you.

Hello,

Could you give me the link to this? I am only able to find this - https://rog.asus.com/us/monitors/above-34-inches/rog-swift-oled-pg48uq-model/helpdesk_download/ which is just the drivers and not the firmware. Thanks.

Found it. Updating now.

Okay, this is looking much better. I just need to fiddle with some minor settings. Thank you all so much. This looks a lot better.

Different articles about this monitor on io-tech.fi and techporn.ph.

article says “high input lag is a bug related to adaptive sync and it’s selection. When Adaptive Sync is off, the screen’s input lag is a good 8 ms, and when it’s on, the input lag drops to about 2 milliseconds.

After the reset, Adaptive Sync is on by default, so the input lag SHOULD be about 2 milliseconds, but if Adaptive Sync has been off before the reset, the input lag is a good 8 milliseconds. When Adaptive Sync is turned off, the input lag is still 8 milliseconds, but when it is turned on again, the input lag finally drops to 2 milliseconds.

The bug is repeatable every time” used translator.

Could you please confirm if you are referring to the issue of delay when using the ROG Swift OLED PG27AQDM with HDR enabled?
If so, are you using HDMI or DP for the connection? Which specific HDR mode experiences the delay?
If possible, please provide a complete video recording of the delay issue, as it will help us better understand your situation.

Thank you.
