ROG Strix XG27AQDMG bad white balance/green tint in HDR?

Hi

I have a PG27AQDM and bought an XG27AQDMG because of the better brightness in full bright scenes and the glossy panel. My expectation was that the contrast is better and the ABL doesn't kick in as early as it does with the PG27. This happens for example if you play World of Warcraft classic under HDR in the barrens where there is much flat bright orange color all over the screen.

Now what I did get with the newer XG27AQDMG was that in scenes like the above described it actually was better and the ABL did not kick in. So that was expected behaviour.

The problem though is that the white balance under HDR is generally really lacking and there is no OSD method to change that. Blue Skies in the Witcher for example look greenish and white is not really white but a little off. I wouldnt have realized that probably but the same game, same scene on the same PC does look much better on the old PG27AQDM. On the old monitor white is really white and blue is really blue.

Is the panel quality of the XG27AQDMG just worse than that of the PG27AQDM? Sadly ASUS does not offer any method to change white balance or color settings under HDR and Windows HDR calibration changes nothing either. Using NVidia Control Panel I can add some blue and remove some green but it still looks way worse than on the old PG27AQDM.

Do I miss something here?

Hi @Khaaan ,

Thank you for reporting the white balance abnormality issue with the HDR mode of your XG27AQDMG monitor.

We have indeed received feedback from some users that there may be abnormal skin tones or loss of shadow details in HDR mode, especially at 100% brightness. Therefore, we have released the MCM104 firmware update to optimize the HDR mode.

To help us locate the issue more accurately, we would like you to confirm the following:

  1. Firmware version: Please make sure that your monitor firmware is updated to the latest MCM104 version. If not, please download and install it from the ASUS website.
  2. Signal cable test: You can try replacing the HDMI or DisplayPort cable to see if the problem improves.
  3. Abnormal image: To better understand your problem, we suggest you provide an image of the monitor's abnormal white balance in HDR mode, and compare it with a normal display image.

If the problem persists after you have completed the above steps, please provide the following information:

  • PC model:
  • Graphics card model and driver version:
  • Operating system version:

We will further assist you in analyzing the problem based on the information you provide.

Please note: Different monitor panels have different characteristics, different model may have slightly different display effects in HDR mode. Therefore, we cannot guarantee that all models will get exactly the same display effect.

Thank you.

Providing detailed device specifications (MB/CPU/GPU/PSU, etc.) and the respective driver versions, OS version, and BIOS version will help us analyze the issue more effectively.

Hi and thank you for your answer

I did choose a QD OLED Monitor now instead and strangely enough it had more or less the same issue at first: White seemed to be a little greenish blue but it did not look as washed out as the XG27AQDMG.

With the QD OLED it was actually enough to change the Gamma settings for the seperate color channels in NVidia Control Panel to achieve a good white balance. Still not as bright as the PG27AQDM but with more deep colors (as is to be expected from a QD OLED).

It might ne a nice idea for future developments to somehow add the option to change the color channels on OLED Monitors even in HDR Mode. Either by OSD settings or via ASUS' software that works actually really good in SDR Mode.

Maybe I just got unlucky and got a bad panel on the XG27 and I couldn't test the 104 Firmware since I got an error message with both methods (USB Stick and USB cable connection) but that was probably due to some USB connection problems on the PC side.

So for me the issue is resolved by just choosing a QD OLED alternative to the XG27AQDMG, thanks for your help.
