PG42UQ loud annoying speaker static (bug / defect)

Onesimus

I've had my PG42UQ for about two months and now all of a sudden I'm getting loud static and distortion from the internal speakers almost every time I use it. I changed nothing about the devices or cables I had plugged into it.

The static/distortion starts quietly then after about 30 seconds it builds and grows louder to the point of being very annoying.

The only way to make this static stop is to a) mute the speakers (hence I know it's not the internal fan noise or anything) or b) unplug and replug the display port or HDMI input of the connected device that is currently "talking" to the monitor: when I do this, the static stops for a minute or two but then returns within 3-10 minutes each time.

I have external speakers so normally this wouldn't be the end of the world but there doesn't seem to be any way to mute the monitor's internal speakers without simultaneously muting the monitor's audio out which I need for my external speakers.

So my whole sound system is messed up by this.

Any help or advice?? Thanks so much

Hi @Onesimus ,

Regarding the static noise issue with the built-in speakers of your PG42UQ monitor, we suggest you check the following items:

  1. Replace the connection cable: Try replacing the HDMI or DisplayPort cable between the monitor and the computer to rule out the possibility of a cable malfunction.
  2. Update the monitor firmware: Please ensure that your monitor firmware is updated to the latest version V040. If not, please download and install it from the ASUS website.
  3. Check the sound settings: Go to "Control Panel" -> "Sound" and make sure that the monitor's speakers are set as the default device and that no sound enhancement features are enabled.
  4. Update the sound card driver: If your computer's sound card driver is outdated, please update it to the latest version.
  5. Eliminate electromagnetic interference: Please move the monitor away from other devices that may cause electromagnetic interference, such as wireless routers, mobile phone chargers, etc.

If the above methods still cannot solve the problem, please record a video of the static noise generated by the built-in speakers of the monitor in MP4 format and provide the video to us along with the following information:

  • System configuration: PC model, graphics card model, all driver versions, operating system version
  • Monitor product serial number (via PM box)

We will further assist you in analyzing the problem based on the information you provide.

Thank you.

Please note that response times may be delayed due to upcoming regional holidays. For urgent inquiries, please contact your local service center. Thank you for your patience.
