PG32UCDP bug - screen sometimes stays black when turning back on after idle turn off

stringslaps

My power settings turns my screens off after 5 minutes.

When this happens, sometimes the monitor will not display anything after waking back up, even the OSD will not show.  But the power indicator is red.  My second monitor turns back on like normal.

Right now it is set at 4k resolution and 240hz using the hdmi 2.1 port on my RTX 3080.  Firmware 102.  I think it is related to DSC.  I may drop it back down to 120hz for now.  I have gotten past it by turning the monitor off and on, but that is annoying and causes my windows and apps to shift around while the GPU resets the displays.

I have exact same problem. A fix would be nice. On new 105 firmware. I have had the unit since launch and it has always been an issue.

Hi @stringslaps @SRAustin ,

Thank you for providing detailed information. To more accurately locate your issue, we would like to further confirm the following:

  • Power management settings: Do you currently have any power saving modes enabled on the display (e.g., Adaptive-Sync, FreeSync)? We recommend that you temporarily turn off all power saving modes and restore the display's OSD settings to default, and see if the problem persists.
  • Black screen situation: Does the "black screen" you described mean that the display has no image at all, and even the OSD cannot be displayed?
Does the black screen situation last for a period of time or will it recover automatically? If you need to manually turn off and on to recover, please tell us the approximate black screen time. Does this black screen phenomenon occur every time you wake up the display, or does it occur occasionally
  • HDMI cable: Are you currently using the original HDMI cable? We recommend that you try replacing it with another HDMI 2.1 cable, especially a official  certified cable that supports high refresh rates, and see if the problem persists. If possible, you can try using a DisplayPort cable to connect and see if it can improve the problem.
  • Refresh rate impact: Does the black screen problem occur regardless of whether the refresh rate is set to 120Hz or 240Hz?
  • Multiple display settings: Are you currently connected to multiple displays? We recommend that you temporarily disconnect other displays and only connect the PG32UCDP to see if the problem persists.
  • Problem recording: To better understand the process of the problem, please record a video of the entire process from entering sleep state to waking up the display and the black screen appears. The video format should be MP4.
  • Computer configuration: Please provide the detailed configuration information of your computer, including:
  1. CPU model
  2. Graphics card model (RTX 3080)
  3. Motherboard model
  4. Operating system version
  5. Graphics card driver version

Thank you.

Providing detailed device specifications (MB/CPU/GPU/PSU, etc.) and the respective driver versions, OS version, and BIOS version will help us analyze the issue more effectively.

  • All settings are default, I am only using console hdr instead of hdr 400.
  • The OSD does not display when I click any buttons on the monitor and there is not a 'No Signal' message on the screen.  The power indicator is red instead of orange.  The black screen situation does not resolve by itself.  I even disconnected the HDMI cable from the GPU and plugged it back in.  I have to reboot the monitor.  This seems to occur randomly.  I have only had the monitor for 1 week (just launched in US) but I have seen it occur twice.
  • I am using the included HDMI 2.1 cable.  I have not tried it using the displayport cable yet.
  • So far I have only seen it occur at 240hz, I have only ran it at 120hz for a day.
  • Next time it occurs I will try to disconnect the other monitor and record video.

CPU: AMD 5800X3D

GPU: EVGA RTX 3080 FTW3 ULTRA

Motherboard: MSI B550M Mortar WIFI

Hi @stringslaps ,

thank you for providing the information. If you could provide a video of the issue occurring, it would greatly assist our team in identifying the problem.

Thank you for your cooperation.

Providing detailed device specifications (MB/CPU/GPU/PSU, etc.) and the respective driver versions, OS version, and BIOS version will help us analyze the issue more effectively.

-------------

All the the settings are default , but I have also tried numerous other modes with the same result. I have never been concerned about energy efficiency so I do not run power savings modes on any hardware I own and always go for max performance.

2. Black screen situation: Does the "black screen" you described mean that the display has no image at all, and even the OSD cannot be displayed?

This results when the machine is turned back on after a shut down. The monitor will go into a standby mode, the machine is powered up. The logo goes red but the display never comes on. The machine is running, you can hear windows boot up, but no screen. If you power cycle the display with he button or physically remove the power from the display then the Republic of gamers logo comes on and it starts working. The OSD also does not function when this is happening. Just the red logo on the front of display to indicate it is on.

3. HDMI cable: Are you currently using the original HDMI cable? We recommend that you try replacing it with another HDMI 2.1 cable, especially a official certified cable that supports high refresh rates, and see if the problem persists. Who uses HDMI on a PC? Display port 1.4. I have tried multiple cables besides the ones the shipped with the unit.

5. Refresh rate

---

Does not matter

6. Multi Display

---

Single Display System

7. Recording

---

I can make one but it really is exactly like I described and will not show anything differently. shot down the computer, turn it back on. The red logo will light up but nothing will display on the screen. If I turn it off an on it will bring up the ROG logo and then work. Sam if I just pull the power and plug it back in. Hitting keyboard, moving mouse when its black does nothing.

8. System Config

AMD 7950

RTX4090

ASUS Proart 760E

Win 11 23H2

560.81 driver (It has done this on every version since this monitor has launched and was available for purchase in US)

I have also hooked this to two other machines in the house with same results both Intel and AMD with both NVIDIA and AMD GPU. I also have 2 other QD-OLED using the same panel from other manufacturer that do not have this issue. It really seems to be an issue with detecting a signal when coming out of standby. As I mentioned above if you power it off or pull the power and plug it back in it works fine. I think when I got it it was on firmware 1.01 or 1.02 so its been through a few updates to its current 1.05 but always had the issue.

Hi @stringslaps @SRAustin ,

based on the information you provided, it seems that you are experiencing an issue where the display goes black (with a red indicator light) when it is turned off and then turned back on again. However, it is important to note that your scenario is slightly different from each other, as @stringslaps  issue occurs only at 240Hz, while @SRAustin  occurs regardless of the refresh rate.

Therefore, we recommend providing a video showing the complete process of the issue occurring to help our team confirm and investigate further (please note that the video should be in MP4 format).

Thank you for your cooperation.

Providing detailed device specifications (MB/CPU/GPU/PSU, etc.) and the respective driver versions, OS version, and BIOS version will help us analyze the issue more effectively.
