PG32UCDM: Video signal issues (White image flicker & black screens)

ScaryBandana

Hi,

I would like to point out a problem with the PG32UCDM. I have issues with the image signal on several units of the PG32UCDM. A white artifact often appears on the screen for a brief moment (one second), which I suspect, depending on the refresh rate, either only appears in the top right corner (120Hz) or the entire lower half of the screen (240Hz). Sometimes the monitors lose the signal completely for a brief moment. As soon as the signal comes back, the Dolby Vision logo appears again in the top right. I have experienced the problem with 3 PG32UCDM units (MCM105 & MCM106 firmware). The issue occurs randomly on one screen at a time. The problem occurs with the cables that came with the monitors and also when AMD FreeSync is disabled.
A Reddit user also reports he has the same issue with his unit. I have attached a picture from the Reddit user that shows the glitch. The Reddit user reports that he is experiencing glitches via HDMI1. For me, the issue occurs via DisplayPort (I rarely use HDMI, so I can't say whether the isue also occurs with my PG32UCDMs via HDMI). Both I and the Reddit user have Dolby Vision enabled. I also had the issues before the Dolby Vision update (MCM105). My PG32UCDMs are connected to an AMD Radeon RX 7900 XTX via DisplayPort. The Reddit user connected his PG32UCDM to an Xbox Series X via HDMI.

Hi @ScaryBandana ,

Thank you for contacting us.

To help us better troubleshoot your display issue with white images, we would like you to confirm the following:

  1. Scenario of the issue: Under what circumstances does this issue usually occur? For example: when playing a specific game, opening a certain application, or performing a certain operation? Please describe the situation in which the problem occurs in as much detail as possible so that we can better understand the problem.
  2. Frequency and location of the issue: How often does this issue occur? Is it frequent or occasional? Does the white image always appear in the upper right corner? Or does it appear randomly in different locations on the screen? Has the entire screen ever turned white?
  3. Firmware update impact: Before updating the firmware to version 105, did you encounter a similar problem?
  4. Driver update: Please ensure that your graphics card driver and display firmware are up to date. You can download the latest drivers from the ASUS website or the graphics card manufacturer's website.
  5. Factory reset: We recommend that you try resetting the display to its factory settings to see if it resolves the issue.
  6. Problem recording: To better visualize the problem, please record a video of the process in which the problem occurs. Please use an MP4 format video and ensure that the video is clear.

Providing this information will help us locate the problem more quickly.

Also, kindly provide the monitor's serial number/MB model/GPU/CPU/OS Version/Driver version via PM box for our reference.

Thank you.

I am the Reddit user who took the image, and what I can tell you is:

1) happens randomly when playing any game on Xbox series X when Dolby vision is enabled. Disabling Dolby vision solves this issue

2) really hard to tell since it’s a fraction of seconds, I could tell that it happens once every 2 to 3 minutes. Always showing that white rectangle in the upper right section of the screen. Screen never turned completely white

3) firmware 105 since it’s the one with Dolby vision

4) I am on Xbox so no driver involved

5) I doubt it’s something that could solve the issue, I will eveluate at a later time

6) I have a video from which I extracted that frame but I don’t know where I could upload it

Hi @oldhouse  ,

Thank you for your information.

To further clarify the issue, we would like you to confirm the following:

  1. Signal cable: What type of signal cable are you currently using to connect the monitor (e.g., HDMI, DisplayPort)? Does the white flickering issue still exist after trying a different signal cable?
  2. Refresh rate: When you adjust the refresh rate of the monitor, how does the white flickering issue change? Does the frequency or location of the flickering change? Does this issue only occur in the upper right corner of the screen?
  3. Other applications: Besides playing games, does this white flickering issue also occur when you watch YouTube videos or use other applications?
  4. Video recording: To better understand the issue, we suggest you record a video of the screen when the white flickering occurs, upload the video to the cloud (such as Google Drive, Dropbox, etc.), and then provide us with the sharing link.

Thank you.

Here you have link for video showing the issue: https://www.dropbox.com/scl/fi/eclw295wp74kj4jzyf6tl/Video-15-11-24-17-05-00.mov?rlkey=b8mjy11h9x7u6...

xbox can only connect through HDMI so I can’t test different cable types, I have tested a few different HDMI cables and I have same issue with all of them. I haven’t tested other applications but it happens in every game launched with Dolby vision enabled, both at 60 and 120 Hz

Hi,

The problem occurs completely randomly, whether when playing games or watching a YouTube video.
The black screens only occur very rarely, maybe once every 1 to 2 weeks, whereas the white glitches occur daily multiple times.
The glitch always occurs either in the top right corner or in the entire lower half of the screen. I strongly suspect that the refresh rate influences the position of the glitch. One PG32UCDM runs at 240Hz and the glitch always occurs in the entire lower half, and another PG32UCDM only runs at 120Hz and the glitch only occurs in the top right corner. I had another PG32UCDM that was replaced because of a problem with the stand, this one also had the problem with the glitch, it also had the glitch in the top right corner (because it only ran at 120Hz).
The glitch occurred since day 1 with FW MCM101.
All drivers are up to date. The monitor has also already been reset. That doesn't solve the problem.
Unfortunately, I don't have a video because, as I said, the problem occurs too randomly and for too short a time to record it.

Hardware: ROG CROSSHAIR X670E HERO, AMD Radeon RX 7900 XTX (MBA model), AMD Ryzen 7950X3D, Windows 11 24H2 (Build 26100.2605), AMD Adrenalin Edition 24.12.1.

I'll send you the serial numbers via DM.

Hi @ScaryBandana ,

Thank you for the detailed information.

To further clarify the issue, we would like to reconfirm the following:

  1. Signal cable testing: We would like to reconfirm if you have tried using different specifications of signal cables (such as HDMI 2.1, DisplayPort 1.4, etc.) to connect the monitor? This can help us determine if the problem is with the signal cable.
  2. Dolby Vision: Have you enabled the Dolby Vision feature? If so, we suggest you try turning off this feature and see if the problem disappears.
  3. Firmware version and device compatibility: You mentioned that the problem started with the 101 firmware version. To rule out the graphics card issue, have you tried connecting the monitor to other devices (such as a laptop) to see if the problem still occurs?

Thank you.

Dolby Vision actually seems to be the trigger. I had the monitor in HDR10 mode all day today (selected in the monitor OSD) and the glitches didn't occur. A few minutes after I enabled Dolby Vision again, the glitches occurred again. I'm pretty sure that I had the glitches before the Dolby Vision update was released (since I bought the monitor shortly before the update was released, I could be wrong). The current status with MCM105 is that the glitches only occur when Dolby Vision is enabled, not with HDR10 (with MCM106, which is only flashed on certain units from the factory), the glitches also occurred when Dolby Vision was enabled.

I recently connected a PS5 with the HDMI 2.1 cable included with the monitor, and I didn't notice any glitches with HDR10 enabled. The PC is currently connected with a third-party DisplayPort 1.4 cable. The glitches occur with this cable as well as with the DisplayPort 1.4 cable that came with the monitor. I tested both DisplayPort cables on both of my PG32UCDM units with the same result.

Hi,

I have now been able to record a video of the problem.
In the video, the FPS counter of the monitor OSD is positioned above the location of the glitch, so you can see that the problem is occurring behind the monitor OSD, this could possibly be helpful internally in narrowing down the problem. The monitor in the video is connected with the included ROG USB-C cable.

Another important piece of information is that I only bought the PG32UCDM visible in the video last week, and it has been running smoothly for the entire last week, with no static noise and no black screens. Both problems started today. According to OLED Usage Info, the third unit ran for 51 hours and went through 19 pixel cleaning cycles before the problems started.

However, I also had a PG32UCDM unit in the past that was delivered with a defective stand and therefore only stayed with me for a maximum of 2-3 days before it was replaced, and this unit had these problems since day 1.

Hello,

In the past two days the glitch occurs very often to my PG32UCDM with the HDR disabled and I have black screens as well.
During watching Netflix on Windows app I get black screen and then the video is completely gone with only the subtitles keep on playing.
