PG32UCDM Console Mode HDR issue

FallenDeity

My and other's PG32UCDM monitors have a clipping issue on PC when using the console HDR mode in Windows 11. Currently, the monitor clips at 450 nits in the Maximum Luminance window but it clips correctly in the Max Full Frame Luminance window. Is there a firmware update in the works for this or is this an RMA issue?

When i play COD Warzone and enable HDR10 colours are too vibrant, i try everything and skip, i go for Dolby and game hdr and looks good but not perfect yet, what is best setting for you, gaming?

Can anyone tell best setting for Call of Duty Warzone?

Ive test Assasins creed Valhalla and Forza Motosport, Diablo 4, perfect but in COD its strange when i look in the sun its ok but when i look a little down its too bright picture, i play on HDR10 console HDR and dynamic boost brightnes

Well 103 already behaved like that, both tests clip at the same brightness values for me.

So I'm unsure if its any different. Im not seeing the APL being higher at all. Maybe its just not possible without clipping? I dont know.

Another observation by me is that, if I cap a game at 450 nits and then turn on the brightness boost it looks pretty similar to 1k nits with the boost off. Maybe someone else can confirm, I unfortunately dont have a meter to measure actual brightness

Is there way to auto disable ALB when in HDR?

No. ABL is core to OLED. They all have it, but some types are able to not have it kick in until larger APL. JOLED, for example, was about to do around 50% APL before ABL kicked in.

Based on quick testing I think this is overall a good update with lots of options.

I would say that currently "bright" HDR modes for people who prefer bright overall image are:

  • Console HDR + Dynamic Brightness Boost: This is same as the previous beta firmware and also definitely the brightest mode. Tradeoff is clipping for high brightness values on high APL scenes when the panel cannot keep up with the desired nit level, which can bother some if you are sensitive to that. Although in my experience rarely visible in real games and easy to ignore. You can mitigate this by calibrating HDR with lesser peak brightness such as 800 nits instead of 1000 so the game doesn't output values outside of panel capability so often.
  • DisplayHDR 400 True Black: This is no doubt the most "accurate" bright mode as it functions more in line of the panel capabilities (panel can only do 280 nits full screen). But unfortunately it also means you don't reach 1000 nit highlights that the panel is also capable of.
  • Dolby Vision Bright: This new mode seems to be pretty good overall too. Not quite as bright as the above two modes overall, but in comparison seems to have less noticeable ABL behavior and slight gradual falloff for peak brightness values so it doesn't have so hard clipping as the dynamic boost mode. Negative for this mode is that not all games support it. Using borderless fullscreen in most games I tested allowed the game run with DV mode active even if game itself doesn't support DV, but some switched to HDR10 mode instead (unless in windowed mode which isn't a real option).

At least now there is good selection of options and the old Console HDR mode is also available for those who game in dark room.

EDIT: As noted below, Cinema HDR + Dynamic Brightness Boos (auto on) seems to be the new "best". It is same brightness as Console HDR but less clipping.

Thank you very much for those ideas.
I did such calibration: 0, 800, 260
And now Console + boost looks almost perfect!
The only thing you need to do is to lower paper white value in in-game HDR settings. But now I don't need to lower it so much. For example in Alan Wake I lower it from 200 nits to 140-150 nits. Before I was forced to lower it to 120 because of a very noticeable clipping

First of all I would like to thank the Asus team for pushing out this firmware update!
As far as I can tell "Gaming HDR" and "Cinema HDR" have been updated aswell.
I was watching the infamous Winterfox video in HDR: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mn7HB1AqqTQ
and switching between the modes. Both Gaming HDR and Cinema HDR are as bright as Console HDR WITH Dynamic Brightness Boost on!
I can also confirm that all 3 modes deliver similar brightness measured in LUX.

Next I hopped on Last Of Us Part 1 - Highway Exit mission. When looking at the sun Console HDR + Dynamic Brightness Boost has a lot of clipping around the clouds. Gaming HDR has way less clipping and Cinema HDR had the least amount of clipping. From this 2 tests it looks like Gaming/Cinema HDR have the same overall picture brightness as Console HDR + Boost but have way less clipping making them superior in my opinion. Could you guys also give Gaming/Cinema HDR a try and share your findings?

Huh, good call, Cinema HDR actually seems pretty usable, soome clipping but not nearly as bad as Gaming HDR or Console with Boost

I'll test around some more

Thanks for bringing that to my attention
