PG32UCDM Console Mode HDR issue

FallenDeity

My and other's PG32UCDM monitors have a clipping issue on PC when using the console HDR mode in Windows 11. Currently, the monitor clips at 450 nits in the Maximum Luminance window but it clips correctly in the Max Full Frame Luminance window. Is there a firmware update in the works for this or is this an RMA issue?

Indeed, in the new firmware DBB seems to be always active for Gaming and Cinema HDR.

It probably is an unintended bug, I bet they meant it to be off because the firmware change log doesn't say anything about changes in those two modes, but a welcome bug nevertheless because the new Gaming HDR (with DBB) is no doubt the best HDR mode they have released so far.

This is exactly why I asked about GamingHDR.
I hope they don't say that, it really is the best so far.

Robot_M's measurements don't have enough greyscale points to show it, but GamingHDR and CinemaHDR both have Dynamic Brightness Boost enabled. I suspect this is unintended given how the toggle functions with ConsoleHDR mode, defaulting to off, not the other way around.

You can see DBB enabled in the graphs with the spike just under 45 grey.

10% Windows - ConsoleHDR, ConsoleHDR DBB, GamingHDR, CinemaHDR
ConsoleHDR - 10%ConsoleHDR - 10%ConsoleHDR - DBB - 10%ConsoleHDR - DBB - 10%GamingHDR - 10%GamingHDR - 10%CinemaHDR - 10%CinemaHDR - 10%

2% Windows - ConsoleHDR, ConsoleHDR DBB, GamingHDR, CinemaHDR
ConsoleHDR - 2%ConsoleHDR - 2%ConsoleHDR - DBB - 2%ConsoleHDR - DBB - 2%GamingHDR - 2%GamingHDR - 2%CinemaHDR - 2%CinemaHDR - 2%

The grayscale point setting I used for the test: 21 Point 5% step 0-100%

No spike was detected at 45 gray.

You need to be using 10-bit values, which Calman can have issues with. You won't see it with 8 bit values. It's also only one value, measuring on either side of that value won't show it.

I own Calman and ColourSpace and personally stopped using Calman for most stuff. It's nice for those who want to take advantage of AutoCal for their TVs but even that has its issues. I generally use it to cross check some stuff, but I don't really trust it on its own.

So what is the best hdr setting to use?

The best mode is the one you like the most 🙂

Thst is all personal preference. Every mode has his pros and cons.

I still like the "console mode" WITHOUT "brightness boost" the most.

A hard clip will have better PQ tracking accuracy, but it will be easier to reach the automatic brightness limit, such as DisplayHDR400 mode.
Roll-off has poor PQ tracking and low brightness, but also the auto-brightness limit is not as easy to reach, and there is more detail at high brightness, e.g. Gaming HDR mode at 10% window size.

Gaming HDR mode at 100% window size may be limited by auto brightness limitation or power limitation, resulting in poor PQ tracking performance.

When the target brightness is 250 nits at 100% window size. (FW105)
DisplayHDR400: ~190 nits
Gaming HDR: ~100 nits
Console HDR: ~100 nits
Console HDR + DBB: ~100 nits

When the target brightness is 600 nits at 100% window size. (FW105)
DisplayHDR400: ~250 nits
Gaming HDR: ~175 nits
Console HDR: ~160 nits
Console HDR + DBB: ~250 nits

Latest firmware has the ability to change HDR mode on freesync premium pro. Excellent!

Am I tripping or do you have to set the nits limit to 450ish nits for console + boost? If I go any higher I get clipping
