PG32UCDM Console Mode HDR issue

My and other's PG32UCDM monitors have a clipping issue on PC when using the console HDR mode in Windows 11. Currently, the monitor clips at 450 nits in the Maximum Luminance window but it clips correctly in the Max Full Frame Luminance window. Is there a firmware update in the works for this or is this an RMA issue?

Can we please get any official info about a firmware update?
Is a new firmware being worked on at all?
Is there a release schedule?
What bugs improvements are being targeted?

Posts about the HDR bug have been here and on reddit for 3 weeks. No information so far. Even one simple sentence "we are working on new firmware and HDR repair". Total ignorance of customers, despite the most expensive monitors on the market.

The worst thing is that there are still posts here defending the monitor and saying "this is how it should be, it's great, lovely Asus".

I get it, you are angry. I also paid 1500€+ for this display and I am looking forward to a firmware update.
It's no use making assumptions. There could be a 1000 reasons why it's taking a bit longer. People aren't always acting with malice.

There is already a post from Paul13 in this thread that mentioned a reply from ASUS support, basically expecting a firmware release for this week:

I got some update from the ASUS customer service guys. He mentioned the NEW firmware is under final testing that fix the wrong EDID setting to make RTX HDR can reach 1015nits. Plan to release by next week. 
On the other hand, the AUTO KVM also implement in this version.


No idea if that's actually going to fix what we are looking at, but we will see.
If the panels are actually faulty in any way, I doubt they can just overlook it and pretend there is no problem.
But some things can take time, for whatever reason.

If this is targeted toward me, I'm not defending Asus. I've posted about several issues and currently have an open ticket on what I consider fairly significant bugs with Uniform Brightness and P3 gamut mapping, but I also have the technical means and knowledge to verify any claims I make with actual measurements. If ConsoleHDR mode is functioning as an HGIG mode, which is how it behaves in measurements using a 10% window, then yes, hard clipping at 450nits in the Window's HDR Cal Tool for Max Luminance is logical. On the other had, the Max Full Frame Luminance not clipping at the same value is odd, and that mismatch is typically a sign of some sort of tonemapping. That doesn't show in 2% window measurements though, at least not how one would expect. 

For the ABL concern between 1000nit and TB400 modes... I think it's worthy of discussion, but anyone who understands ABL will know it's not definitive on whether or not it's broken or by design on this monitor. In real scene content the monitor only shows an overall brightness discrepancy with higher APL, while in lower APL content the brightness is quite high, even higher than some other brands. That isn't abnormal behavior when aggressive ABL is at play. It's pretty obvious a result of ABL since you can play the same scenes that cause it in a smaller window instead of full screen and it doesn't happen. As for it being addressed by reviewers @ApolloEleven, Monitors Unboxed covered it in their HDR testing, as well as a brightness discrepancy in some gaming content between Nvidia and AMD. They also showed 10% and 2% window testing for ConsoleHDR that aligns with my results. They're typically quick to call stuff out, and the only issue they asked to be addressed is the Nvidia/AMD one. Most reviewers aren't using the Windows HDR Calibration tool because it's largely pointless when you can manually set peak brightness in most HDR games. I wouldn't expect them to even touch that menu.

I get that people are upset, but complaining about stuff that is a function of how HDR works like tonemapping/hard clipping isn't very helpful unless one can show how it's working against spec with some sort of validation. Also, comparing ABL configs between this monitor and other brands doesn't prove Asus is broken given how ABL works. If you're not happy with that, my suggestion is to try to exert some patience while waiting for Asus to comment/address stuff. If you're too impatient for that and have recently purchased your monitor, return it and buy a different one that works for your needs.

Same here, mine clips at 420nits also in the second test.  

Man, i don't like this monitor right now with HDR. I bought this monitor for HDR content but it is useless at the moment, scenes are way to dark on Console HDR. 

We need a fix Asus ASAP! How did this even get trough the tests fase?

I also have the same problem. The three HDR modes actually have some issues. In game mode, the yellow highlight in some scenes will be overexposed, while in movie mode, the skin color of characters in some scenes will turn gray. In console mode, the problem is relatively less, but it is also the same as yours. In large areas of white scenes, the brightness of the screen will be too dark. I have tested several sources, and it should be that when yellow and white appear in a certain area, they will suddenly darken. Here, we can use the “Cirque du Noir” test film. When the parrot flaps its wings, this phenomenon will be reproduced

@wraith321 So what's the problem with writing on the forum that they are working on solving the problem? Then everyone is calm and waiting. Right now they just don't give a ****** about us.

The thing is... 

Only the "true black 400" mode is certified. And has to follow some metrics in tone mapping and so on.

 

All the other modes are "Asus specialised" and Asus can do with the mappings what they want.

 

There is nothing that can be "too dim" or 'too bright". The only thing that is possible to measure is peak brightness. And if it goes to 1000nits in 2% window, it is fine. When some scenes (snow for example are looking "too dim" its only the tone mapping from asus, but maybe its intendend from asus.

@Richu6 So people should know that among the monitors on the same panel from Samsung, Asus made the worst and is in HDR 2 times darker than the others 🙂 Nobody should buy this and Asus would quickly make the brightness magically increase.
