PG32UCDM black screen during game sessions!!

So i am having this issue since the day i bought the monitor.

At first it was happening during a certain game, the callisto protocol.

Now it is happening also in Destiny 2.

As i am playing these games with HDR on,after some time the screen goes black and i have to manually turn the monitor off and on again in order for the image to appear again.

I had at the beggining the factory firmware, after i updated to MCM102 and now i have the 103.

This issue seems to be consistent on all firmwares.

I know it is not related to my windows setup because on the same pc with a different monitor this does not happen.

I have my pg32ucdm connected via dp.

Any suggestion would be much appreciated!!

Hey everybody. So after countless hours of troubleshooting and scanning the internet for a fix i really feel like i have to share my part here aswell.

I experience the same problem as everybody else here. Bought a brand new PG 32 UDCP. When playing Stalker 2, connected via DP HDR off (case issues already startet bevor i could even turn on hdr) and Gsync/VRR on, i get CONSTANT black screens. Like every minute, not just once or twice a session, i can barely walk 50 meters in the game before the screen goes black again for some seconds.

This monitor cost me more than a monthly salary and it seems that they have not even remotely tested it. The only "workarounds" there are right now, seem to be a) deactivate DSC and loose the feature you paid a premium for, or B) hope for your GPU to have a HDMI 2.1 Port becuase on DP it is unplayable. So here i am with my 120 hz 4k monitor. Nice one Asus, thank you for nothing!

If you are reading this because you are about to buy one of these - dont. The silence on behalf of asus doesnt really make it better either. This problem is all around the web and i have yet to find a single word from asus or any other companyabout this issue.

And now the best part - What almost made me explode: while i was looking up if hdmi 2.1 is supporting Gsync i stumble upon a thread on reddit from 2-3 years ago, where a samsung screen user has had the EXACT SAME ISSUE. It seems like this problem is going on for years then? i mean this cant be serious right? How can it be that multiple companies have that problem with multiple monitors and nothing happens for years? Come on ASUS... we expect at least as statement that you hear us and are looking into it. This isnt customer service.

If somebody wants to see that reddit thread just google "DOES GSYNC WORK OVER HDMI 2.1" - i dont know if i am allowed to post links here so better be safe than sorry.

Yes, STALKER 2 is another game where the black screen issue occurs for me, too. Have it with DP and Hdmi, doesn't matter. From my personal experience the UCDM seems to have issues with running at 240hz, which means it's most likely related to DSC. The other thing is, that the only solution for me was and still ist, to deactive the DSC-Support and cut the monitor down to 120hz. Btw, to cut the hz down on the OS is NOT a solution and I still have blackscreens. So, only without the DSC support on the unit itself no black screens. Anyway, this is of course NOT a proper solution of any kind, because we all paid a lot of money for having a 32' OLED monitor with 240hz, right?! 😉

Too bad, there is total silence from Asus since a couple of month and the mystery about the existing 106 firmware, which is out there on new devices (new revision???) but not for anybody to dl on the support page. I'm still mixed in terms of RMA, because there is no guarantee that a new monitor will 100% not having this issue. And to get a complete refund is also not for certain.

p.s.: I also tested with vrr off and besides the bad sideeffects if you are used to Gsync it was also not the solution for the super annoying black screen issue. Only the DSC off seems to work at least so far on my side. I also tried out several DP and Hdmi cables but without success.

Just an update almost a week later, I never had a black screen issue after changing from DP to HDMI and disabling VRR and proximity sensor.

Could VRR be the culprit? Read this:

No idea since I did 3 change at the same time. I don't know when VRR is useful. Isn't more a console thing? I'm on PC and 4070FE card.

It really bugs me that there are forum entries from 3 years ago witrh the exact issue, and still monitors are sold for a premium and the advertised features dont even work properly. How can it be that all the big players in the monitor world remain silent on this issue?! it really seems to be something big then..

This post you reffered is adressing the problem 100%. And it seems to be not only a software/driver issue, but also a hardware issue as the OP writes.

What i find to be interesting is the fact, that i dont have the problem over hdmi - but probably only cause VRR doesnt work properly there. If it would be only down to VRR also HDMI would replicate the issue. I'm thinking that it has mainly to do with DSC in combination with VRR as DSC is not active on HDMI 2.1 but active on DP 1.4..

I have been using DP since day one, so I don't believe it has anything to do with DSC. Once I turned off VRR in my OS(Linux), it has not black screened since, which has been several months now.

Interesting observation related to this:

I just replaced my main PC. Moved from Core i9-9900K + Maximus XI Formula + RTX 3090 + Win10  to a R7 9800X3D + X870E Crosshair Hero + RTX 3090 + Win11. Same GPU, same cable, same PG32UCDM monitor. On the old PC I could not enable DSC without having black screens every few hours. DSC off and capped to 120hz things did work. With the new PC I decided to try if the problem persists. Set DSC on, 240hz, VRR on, G-Sync enabled, full screen and windowed. And... been using this for three days and have not yet seen a black screen.

This is somewhat interesting to me. It suggests that OS or CPU/motherboard may play a part in this. I'm definitely sure that this is a real problem, but it does not appear to happen on every config. I don't know what part of the system change was important here, but maybe giving a datapoint for ASUS if they are still having issues reproducing this.

Using the bundled HDMI cable for PG32UCDM and have secondary Acer XB270HU 1440p G-Sync display via DP as well (144hz, G-Sync enabled, VRR on)

I encounter completely random black screens on my PG32UCDM.

This is the second PG32UCDM that I have owned. I returned my first one to MicroCenter for the same issue.

This time, the issue did not develop until over 3 months of regular use so I am now outside of return window.

Unexpected black screens occur during gaming, web browsing and on desktop with no programs running.

Neither OSD or FPS counter from OSD settings are visible during black screen.

Sometimes black screen occurs for only a few sec, then goes away on it's own. Other times black screen is pervasive and a shutdown from computer tower seems to be the best option.

Sometimes black screen occurs painfully often. Other times they are very rare.

As of right now, I have had almost no (except perhaps one) black screens for a few weeks now and I believe that's because I turned off DSC support, VRR, and DDC/CI, but I'm not for sure if that is what really helped.

Using HDMI cable provided with monitor.

And that router is going to create interference with your monitor ports and probably more.

In your case this looks like a signal loss issue. (Hardware)

Try some updates first, fully reconnect HDMI, you can try resitting the ram stick / GPU, look for loose cable in and outside the PC.
