ASUS ROG PG48UQ Firmware V031 HDR still not great

I bought the ROG PG48UQ about a year and a half ago and noticed the issues with HDR shortly afterwards, which are fairly well documented at this point.  I tried the various firmware updates and settled on V028 (because V029 made the HDR noticeably worse), but still wasn't happy.  I considered trying for a refund, but decided to wait a bit to see if a newer firmware version would be released that fixed the issue.

When I saw V031 had been released, and found this post claiming that the HDR was now great, I immediately downloaded an installed it.  However, the HDR is only marginally better.  It still suffers from the same issues, only to a lesser extent.

If I compare the monitor side-by-side with the LG C1 OLED TV we have in our living room and run the same games on both (using the same PC, which is running an RTX 4090 graphics card) the difference is obvious.  If the TV is on "filmmaker mode" (which I understand to be the mode where the TV just puts the unaltered image on the screen) it looks MUCH better in HDR, and even if I put the TV into gaming mode (which is where it looks the most like the PG48UQ monitor) the HDR picture is still clearly better.

I actually did try for a refund this time.  I took the screen into the store where I'd bought it and they said they'd send it off to ASUS Australia (where I live), but it came back to me three weeks later with a note saying "no fault found."

I'm not sure what my next steps should be.  I'm surprised that more people aren't making similar complaints, but the only discussion I can find about firmware V031 is the above post that I linked.  Is anyone else still having HDR issues, and is there further action I can take?

Hi @ashaquick ,

Thank you for your inquiry.

  1. HDR problem description: What is the specific HDR problem you are currently encountering?
  2. Problem screenshot: Please provide a screenshot of the problem occurring for our confirmation.
  3. Display comparison explanation: Due to the different panel characteristics and parameter settings of each display, we do not recommend directly comparing two different models, as this may lead to inaccurate judgments.

I have the ASUS PG48UQ monitor bought 2 weeks ago and I only see the HDR with the 10000K color temperature perfectly, although I think that in this mode the maximum nits fall a little. When I put 6500K if it is brighter but there are colors that fail and have tried everything and there is no way. I have the 031 firmware, I have tried with the Vibrance digital, with the HDR Calibration Windows, adjusting the values of red, green, blue, putting the driver of the screen and there is no way to solve it. It seems that it is not well calibrated in the 6500k HDR mode instead the 1000k HDR there are no problems. Hopefully they get another update again fixing HDR problems in 6500k.
