ASUS ROG PG42UQ black and flickering screen

I recently purchased this monitor and I’m very satisfied with it, except for one issue. Twice now, when the monitor goes into sleep mode, I’ve encountered problems upon waking it up. Once, it started flickering black, and another time the screen stayed black.

Turning the monitor off and on didn’t resolve the issue. I had to disconnect the power, wait for 5 minutes, and then plug it back in.

The monitor is connected to a GeForce 4090 via DisplayPort (original ASUS cable) with a 138Hz refresh rate, HDR OFF, 4K resolution, 32-bit color depth, 10 bcc, and full color range.

I also noticed that my Firmware version is 042, while the latest version on the ASUS website is 040… why is that?
I also followed a guide on the ASUS website that suggested disabling auto HDR to solve the issue (this was after the flickering event, but I later experienced the black screen issue).

I know these problems initially affected this monitor, but I thought they had been resolved with recent firmware updates. So, I'm starting to wonder… do I have a defective screen?

Thanks.

Hi @Legolas84 ,

Thank you for providing detailed information. To better assist you with your ASUS display issue, we would like to clarify a few points:

  1. HDMI cable test: Have you tried using a different HDMI cable to see if the problem can be resolved?
  2. Refresh rate adjustment: Besides the 138Hz refresh rate, have you tried adjusting the refresh rate to other values, such as 60Hz or 75Hz?
  3. Graphics card driver update: Have you confirmed that your graphics card driver is up-to-date? You can visit the graphics card manufacturer's official website to download and install the latest driver.
  4. Issue after waking from sleep: Does the issue only occur when the computer wakes up from sleep? If you could record a video (MP4 format) of the problem occurring, it would help us better understand the situation.
  5. PC model: To provide more accurate suggestions, please tell us your computer model.

Providing the above information will help us understand the root cause of the problem more deeply.

Thank you.

Providing detailed device specifications (MB/CPU/GPU/PSU, etc.) and the respective driver versions, OS version, and BIOS version will help us analyze the issue more effectively.

Thanks for your reply.

1) No, I only used Displayport, because HDMI only supports 8bpc.

2) No, I haven't tried. But it's obvious that I bought the PG42UQ to have a refresh rate of 138hz.

3) I have the latest version of NVIDIA and ASUS drivers (for the monitor).

4) Yes the problem occurs when the monitor wakes up from sleep. However it is very difficult to document with a video as it is sporadic and has only occurred twice so far. The other times the monitor woke up without problems.

5) The computer is an assembly: Intel Core i7 13700k, ASUS ROG Strix Z790-E (last bios), 2x16Gb G.skill DDR5 6400, Gainward GeForce RTX 4090 Phantom, Seasonic Prime 1.3Kw ATX 3.0.

I would also like to have news on this Firmware 042 present on my PG42UQ and not present on the ASUS site (the latest version there is 040). What's new? Why is it not freely downloadable from the ASUS site?

thanks.
