ASUS PG48UQ Firmware V031 (with improved HDR performance)

Marcinprv

It took ASUS over a year to fix the V029 firmware with the terrible HDR mode - more here.
Fortunately, the new V031 is good - maybe I'll buy something from you again!
You can download the latest Firmware here.

  • Bug fix:
1.Adjust HDR EOTF curve to improve HDR performance.

EOTF stands for Electro-Optical Transfer Function. This is a term used in HDR (high dynamic range) displays to describe the action of converting data to a particular brightness on the screen. The EOTF is the mathematical function for transferring an electronic signal into the desired optical signal (i.e. digital to analog function). This differs from gamma in that gamma tells a display to emit a certain percentage of its max brightness, while EOTF tells it how many nits of brightness to produce.

My impressions:

V028

  • Colors in desktop and games are muted
  • Colors in HDR movies are OK (but it doesn't look like good HDR)

V029

  • Colors in desktop and games are vivid
  • Colors in HDR movies are tragic

V029

  • Colors in desktop and games are vivid
  • Colors in HDR movies look very good

Thank you for testing this. Does it fix the auto brightness issues?

Do you mean that after the screen is dimmed you have to move the open window a lot or change to another one with a different contrast?

Yes that. I am guessing no, since ASUS can only do one ticket a sprint. And a sprint lasts 1 year.

This has not changed, if moving the window does not change the brightness then it is best to maximize it.

So it’s still non functional then… 0/10 ASUS. For a £2000 monitor.

The world's first inductive proximity sensor was created just a year later, in 1958.
It's 2025 and ASUS still can't implement such a sensor in its OLED monitors - they add a glowing logo, is it so difficult to add a motion sensor?

But the question is. Why does it have this behaviour at all? None of my other monitors have ever done it in the 20 or so years I have owned them.

You can just disable screen saver in monitor settings. I open https://blackscreen.app/ when leaving PC on for a prolonged period of time to prevent burnout

I think the better option will be good old screensaver set to black and 5 minutes.

The ASUS screen saver detects changes on the screen (the change must probably reach some %), if you additionally activate the built-in Windows screen saver (black screen), then moving the mouse should also activate the built-in ASUS screensaver.

I confirm, it works.
