mouse double click of desktop shortcut opens web page intermittently, with 4K monitor

I have a wired ROG SICA mouse and an Acer B286HK 4K monitor.

When I double click a desktop shortcut to a web URL, it will sometimes not respond and I have to re-click. I varied the polling rate and sensitivity and same problem. I even replaced the micro-switches in the mouse with quality OMRON Japan-manufactured switches. Same problem.

By careful observation I suspect that the problem might be that the pixel size of a 4K monitor is so small that if the mouse moves ever so slightly between clicks 1 and 2, it moves off-pixel and the double click doesn't register as a double-click to Windows. If I hold the mouse rock-solid then I have better luck opening the web page.

Have I diagnosed this correctly or am I imagining things? If this is the problem, any advice other than cultivating a practiced Zen mouse hand? Thanks!

If the mousepad is colorful, in certain specific positions on the mousepad, the mouse sensors detect movement because of the color variation, even if there is no movement.

Try using a fully black mousepad and no lights.

That is a good suggestion. It hadn't occurred to me that the mousepad could give a greater or lesser impression of movement depending on the pattern. I have a black background with Maxwell's equations of electromagnetism in bright white:

72033

(I don't really understand these equations, but they look cool) I'll find something with less contrast.

I turned down the mouse sensitivity down to 400 DPI and it might be helping but then the pointer moves slow!

Thanks for the suggestion!

I put ferrite cores around the USB mouse cable near each end, and it appears to increase the computers responsiveness to double-clicks. It is possible my mouse cable was picking up some interference which caused frequent need to double click on desktop shortcuts. I used the following kit of snap-on ferrite cores:

Hey R5Eandme, I feel your pixelated pain 😞 Dealing with those 4K intricacies can be as tricky as a cat navigating a laser maze. Your suspicion might not be off-base. The minuscule pixel landscape on a 4K monitor can indeed be a double-click conundrum.

Consider tweaking your mouse settings within Windows. Head to the control panel, delve into the mouse settings, and experiment with the double-click speed. Sometimes a slight adjustment can make all the difference. Also, check if your mouse drivers are up to date – it's the digital equivalent of giving your mouse a pep talk.

If the issue persists, try mapping the double-click function to a different mouse button. This could circumvent the pixel dance causing your desktop detour. As for my experience, I once battled a similar issue, and these tweaks saved my sanity. May your clicks be swift and your web pages open seamlessly!!!
