Chakram Core Mouse Click Registration Woes

The_Mess85

So, for 5+ months I've had on and off issues with this mouse where clicks on right and left mouse button clicks aren't registered, but it's only with Grim Dawn. See vid for the annoyance:
https://youtu.be/m8_fSVwrLOI?t=48

As you can see if I open the menu the issue is stopped for short period of time, but it re-occurs very often.

Things I've tried:

- Firmware updated.

- Profiles checked (will try resetting mouse completely) and found set properly.

- Cleaned mouse out.

- Replaced the Omron switches to no avail.

- Changed USB port, issue continued

Does not happen in windows, or any other games, including Avowed, Destiny 2, Citizen Sleeper 1 and 2 etc.So I hypothesis this is an issue only with this mouse and it's driving me to extreme frustration while trying to record the posted footage about a build I made in Grim Dawn. Since I'm trying to get a run that's less than 6 minutes and sustain and damage are heavily reliant on the skill bound to the left mouse button.

More annoyingly I can't afford to replace it right now at all, as I have other things to pay off first.

Also disappointed this is happening because I saw the Chakram Core as an excellent, long lasting mouse after my Logitech G502 Hero Core had it's middle mouse switch die, because Logitech cut corners and used a crap switch for that. One that's also a right pain to desolder. Where as this mouse appears much easier to fix if that ever breaks (it's on a daughter board) and the ability to hot swap the left/right switches meant no more re-tensioning the switch spring or getting soldering kit to fix double clicks.

Which I did with my tank of a G9 and was fiddly as hell to put back the switch. Did hold up nicely though until I broke a ribbon cable disassembling it to clean it and killed the side buttons. Which is yet another reason why I hate ribbon cables.

Mouse is still in warranty, but no long er available to buy here in NZ sadly >_<

Gaaaaaaah. Replaced the switches in my ASUS ROG Chakram Core mouse and this is still fucking happening. Driving me nuts because this is probably due to ASUS doing something very fucking stupid, again. Not as bad as fucking around with the AGP slot power power regulation to given Nvidia an ...

Windows 10, don't have a spare PC/laptop to test nor a working spare mouse since the Logitech G502 Hero got binned due to being to annoying to replace the middle mouse switch

Anyhow, back to what I was going to post:

Okay, that was weird, Grim Dawn comes with an extra tool in it's install folder named "Repair.exe", basically it wipes all settings and triggers steam to verify the game files.

Ran it, set everything up (cloud saving should be off by default frankly, doesn't play well with GD), did some dummy testing and hit the Shattered Realm in both 30-31 and 34-35 bands. Result, problem seems to be gone, but in saying that I need to test more with channelling skills, since those were the worst affected.

Pure "wtf?" that it worked, but I'll take it, since don't have the tools to analyse wtf exactly was happening. Definitely one of those very weird edge cases though no matter what the underlying cause is.

Wtf? Why has there been no reply to this issue? Ugh, this is yet another example of why MBA's art utterly useless.

Anyhow, further testing has shown the following:

1) Issue still only effects Grim Dawn, no sign of it in anything else.

2) Click registration issue seems to increase with play time, getting progressively worse over time.

3) Increasing priority of Grim Dawn in task manager and shifting it off physical cores O and 1 seem to help significantly from the start.

4) Most effective way to re-enable registration is to hit escape, but can also re-enable by using other mouse buttons or more regularly, hitting keys on the keyboard.

5) Editing Steam controller settings had no effect.

Frankly, to get anywhere I need tools to help analyse just what the ****** is going on - because google has proved useless and all the other advise boils down to "buy a new mouse" and "reinstall windows". Which frankly is utterly annoying because no-one seems to recognise this could be solved via fixing settings/files etc.

Anyhow, I'll run a system file check, but I doubt that will fix it, since this is only happening in 1 game. And I hypothesis that this is due to an issue with the mouse via it's interactions with this game. So I need help from ASUS to actually get anywhere with this. Mouse is still under warranty, but frankly, RMA-ing it is a waste of an otherwise functional mouse.

Okay, ruled out it's the Steelseries keyboard that's at issue in theory, will still try putting the mouse at a higher position though.

System File Check didn't help, just fixed some ownership issues.

Increasing Grim Dawn's priority and changing core affinity has definitely helped and can now recover from left/right button clicks not being registered, resulting in a much less frustrating play session. Still have to hit escape, but can now recover 90%+ of the time without it.

So at this point I can only conclude something is going wrong with how the game registers the mouse.

Anyhow, video evidence:

Wait? I breached 7 minutes with only 1 short room and click registration woes?! Anyhow, vid's aim to is display the current state I've gotten things to with my buggy mouse. Turns out upping Grim Dawn's priority in Task Manager and stopping it from running on cores 0 and 1 helps a lot. And more ...

If Grim Dawn is the only game that has the problem, then theoretically, the hardware and drivers are working as intended except on this particular game title. Perhaps try a few different mice or run the game on a different system to test.

I can see that you've tried the game developer, and nobody else has come forward to claim the same issue. No other cases were found on Steam reviews either. How is the mouse connected? Avoid using a USB hub or front panel connectors and see what happens.

I did find a work around though, namely uninstalling Armory Crate weirdly reduces the issue, but making it nearly an non-issue involves increasing priority and changing core affinity.

Also changed where the mouse was plugged in to the back panel of my ASUS Crosshair VIII Hero to top right USB port, putting my Steelseries Apex in to the ports below it.

Drivers are all up to date and also check the game files to no effect, but have moved the game back to C:\ to rule out any legacy issues, since the game engine dates back to the mid 00's as it was originally built for Titan Quest. Which if you're ancient like me, you know sometimes older games demanded they be on C:\. Probably wont help, but eh, with esoteric weirdness like this you never know.

Anyhow, what I need is logging tools to record just wtf is going on, because something weird is most definitely happening and I don't know this area anywhere near well enough to even take an educated guess beyond

Which version of Windows are you running and have you tried to test on different systems or configurations?

Sadly it still happens even with the reset, but it's far less noticeable and usually doesn't result in click registration requiring me to pause often fortunately.

Did 6+ runs of shattered realm and found this issue semi-regulary, but with the other known fixes should fix it I think.

Edit - still a problem sadly, even with the methods used >_<

Things are getting weeeeeeeird.

Remembered I also killed some programs in task manager last night when I got the mouse working. So killed them just before and retried and lo and behold, the click registration issue was now much, much less. Only noticed it once.

i.e. this is what is like before,  with priority to high and core affinity shifted:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H6-0jtpN6_A

Slow it down enough and you'll see points where Aegis of Menhir isn't cast despite the left button being held down constantly.

Compared to this run, where Edge and GoG Galaxy + 1 other I can't recall were killed, no other methods used:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_xH1uoZYwxU

Where in this run AoM was constantly thrown except for standard AoM jank and getting hit with crowd control attacks by enemies. Did feel like one click registration happened, but it was so easy to recover it was barely noticeable.

If I weren't about to hit the sack (brain decided before 6 am is awake teim, despite being awake until 8am the previous night) as I'm loosing words I'd log out and test this again via killing just GoG Galaxy, then Edge etc. High fluffing weirdness this art since none of those programs should have interfered with click registration, since the game's running fullscreen.

Right, bed and hopefully I finally get a full 10hrs sleep 😴

Huh, killed Edge, GoG Galaxy and something else, but can't remember and now the mouse seems to work properly?!
Finally! Updated build: https://www.grimtools.com/calc/pZr0lDG2 Readjusted for faster SR30-31 runs via higher OA and skill point adjustments. If only farming SR30-31 get Physique to 1100 and invest the rest in Cunning for even faster clear speeds, though at a higher risk of death. For deeper SR ...

Have you tried another mouse or computer yet? Keep in mind that the Chakram Core set a new benchmark in terms of lowest click latency when released, perhaps certain old games have trouble with that.
