XGMOBILE 4090 temps at 87 C with memory temp at 106 C

I've noticed that my gpu temps go up in many if not most games and settings even if the power usage is only a 100 watts of the rated 150w but the temps reach 87 degrees and stays there for the entire playtime of my game.

I played Darktide at 120fps with frame gen on and power usage showed 90 to 110 watts max but temps reach 87 degrees which is the cap of these cards.

Whats odd is that the fans dont spin up like it is supposed to.

Normally you can hear the XGMobile fans which sound like a mini vaccuum but here even if the temps are burning hot, the fans are just doing their regular speed. Also the game performance stays smooth and no throttling which is good but the fans dont kick in either.

Also if i alt tab out of the game and switch profiles in Armoury crate from Turbo to Performance and back to Turbo, then the fans do kick in for some time as if the fans suddenly remember to spin faster but then soon after it goes back to normal speeds which again brings the temps back up.

I started noticing this a month or two ago.

I think there may have been an update. Can't remember.

Any tips or solutions are welcome. I don't know if my xgmobile is going to die.

Hi @pandehz ,

Thank you for your inquiry.

To better understand the external graphics card fan speed issue you are experiencing, please provide us with the following information:

  1. Problem start time and setting changes: You mentioned that the problem started occurring a month or two ago. Did you update any drivers or make any system setting changes at that time?
  2. Armoury Crate fan settings: Have you confirmed that the fan speed issue occurs regardless of which fan mode you select in Armoury Crate?
  3. Graphics card driver version: What is the current version of your graphics card driver? Please ensure that all drivers are updated to the latest version.
  4. Connection confirmation: Please ensure that the connection between your external graphics card and laptop is secure.
  5. Monitoring software information: Are you using software such as GPU-Z or HWMonitor to monitor GPU and memory temperatures, as well as fan speed? If so, please provide the relevant monitoring data for our reference.

Additionally, please provide the following information for more detailed analysis:

  • Laptop model and operating system version
  • Armoury Crate version
  • Driver version
  • Detailed description of the problem (including temperature, fan speed, game name, etc.)
  • Temperature and fan speed monitoring data

Please kindly confirm the above information so that we can analyze it. Thank you.

Thank you so much for the reply.

I will collect all the necessary data and get back to you  asap.

Hi,

Here are the details:

  1. Issue may have started 2 months ago. It could have been earlier but not before 6 months because I do check temps on and off. I cannot remember exact dates but it bothered me enough to want to update the bios to 316 on this model.  Though after bios update nothing improved.
  2. Armoury Crate fan settings: Yes this issue happens on both Performance and Turbo
  3. Graphics card driver version: I have tested it on the latest Nvidia Geforce Game Ready Driver Version: 572.60
  4. Connection confirmation: Yes the connection is perfect. I am always careful with the connection and its ejection after use. Also the XGMobile is always kept dust free.
  5. Monitoring software information: Yes I am attaching the HWINFO and GPU-Z logs as well as the screenshot for GPU-Z

Additionally, please provide the following information for more detailed analysis:

  • Laptop model and operating system version – System Model ROG ACRONM - ROG Flow Z13 GZ301VIC , XGMOBILE – RTX 4090, Windows 11 Home,
  • Armoury Crate version – 5.9.14.0
  • Driver version -  Nvidia Geforce Game Ready Driver: 572.60
  • Detailed description of the problem (including temperature, fan speed, game name, etc.) – When playing games on high settings and usually higher frame rates the XGMOBILE fan will not boost. I can hear it casually running. On locked settings for some reason the fan does kick in on most games. Its hard to predict when it works. But it seems like when the cooling is needed as in when nvidia overlay shows 87 degrees the fan is still not boosting. Sometimes if i alt tab out of the game and switch profile from Turbo to Performance and back to Turbo, the fan sometimes kicks in. I really cannot catch the issue properly. On various games if I unlock the frame rates. For eg Darktide at 1440p, 120fps frame gen at maxed setting but Ray Tracing off and DLSS ON – performance.
  • Temperature and fan speed monitoring data – attached HWINFO and GPUZ

I am also attaching the HWINFO and GPUZ log as well as a gpuz screenshot.

For a clean test I ran the free downloadable Monster Hunter Wilds Benchmark Tool from Steam.

You may try that tool to match mine cleanly.

The settings were 1440p, auto which was set to Ultra, Frame Gen was set to ON. The HWINFO and GPUZ data for this is attached with the reply.

Please do let me know if you need anthing else.

I am happy to help solve this for myself and all users out there.
