Asus Tuf OC 4090 black screen to hard reset

I've been building PCs for over a decade now and have built myself 3 PCs. I never had issues with either of my previous 2 PCs (Never went with top of line parts). But the newest one I built a little over a month ago (Middle of July 2024) and decided to go for the latest and greatest parts this time.

Asus Tuf OC RTX 4090
Asus Tuf 1000w PSU
Asus B650-E wifi MoBo
AMD Ryzen 7 7800x3d
32gb G.Skill RAM
NZXT H7 case
NZXT Kraken Elite 240mm AiO cooler
1TB Kingston Nvme ssd

For the first 2 weeks, it ran perfectly, every game max settings, sitting at a cool 65 degrees on both the CPU and GPU. But now for the last 2 weeks I get a black screen crash (Audio is still there, as if the game is still running fine) and EventViewer has no errors or critical notifications at the time of the crashes.

The only thing EV shows is a warning from Nvidia OpenGL driver: either "failed functionality" or "ran out of memory". I have uninstalled and reinstalled current and old Nvidia drivers multiple times (thru GForce Experience, Nvidia Beta App, and manually) all the way back to the driver that worked for 2 weeks (Mid July driver) but all of them now crash. Sometimes it's right after boot up, other times I can work or game for hours before it happens. Tonight, it crashed 8 times right after boot up, to where I can't even use the PC if the DP cable is plugged into the GPU. I am not a tech wizard, just a casual gamer.

I ran some basic diagnostics on the RAM sticks, and both came back without issue. I have unplugged all cables form the PSU and MoBo and reseated them, multiple times.

Do I need to RMA the card or is there something else I can try? I am at a loss and just want to game from time to time with some friends or family.

Hi @Tyberious_Kirk ,

Thank you for providing detailed information.

Based on your description, your computer configuration is very high-end and has been functioning well initially. However, it has recently started experiencing black screen crashes.
We recommend trying the following steps:

  • Restore default settings: Restore your BIOS settings to default values to ensure there are no unnecessary overclocking or other settings affecting system stability.
  • Check temperatures: Make sure the temperatures of your CPU and GPU are within normal ranges to avoid overheating crashes.
  • Test with another graphics card: If possible, try replacing your graphics card with another compatible one to determine if the issue lies in the graphics card.
  • Update BIOS: Check if your motherboard has the latest BIOS version and update to it.
  • Refer to ASUS support: Check the ASUS support page for specific troubleshooting steps related to the graphics card abnormality.

Thank you.

Providing detailed device specifications (MB/CPU/GPU/PSU, etc.) and the respective driver versions, OS version, and BIOS version will help us analyze the issue more effectively.

Thanks for responding!
I did restore the BIOS settings to default the other night (turned off Boost/Overclock). I have had about 5hrs of up time since. 2hrs of general use, and 3 or so of gaming/stress and I have had NO crashes. I do believe that was the cause of the black screen that made me have to hard reset the PC. Thanks!
