ASUS Astral 5090 OC Middle Fan 100% Randomly

I purchased my Asus Astral 5090 OC about a month ago and had no issues until today. The first boot of the day of my PC there was a very loud fan noise. After some troubleshooting, I was able to narrow it down to the middle fan on the GPU. It seems to be random when it happens. Sometimes it goes back to normal, sometimes it stays like this until I turn off the PC. While monitoring through HWinfo64 and Afterburner, the temps are reading normal while idle around 30-34 Celsius, Memory temp is normal about 40-44 Celsius. The fan RPMS do not seem to show the high RPM - they show around 580 RPM for Fan 1 / 2. I have a custom curve set in Afterburner. I turned this off while the fan was doing this and it made no difference in the middle fan. I even tried downloading GPU Tweak while it was doing this but the same, it reads normal even though the fan is going crazy. I ended up reseating the GPU and checking the physical condition. Didn't see anything wrong. After I did this, it seemed to be fine. However, it's still doing it randomly. Not always at start up, never really in games, just randomly.

I'm pretty concerned as I can't replicate it and this was my first large purchase in a while. I've never had to RMA a product before. I currently do not have the packaging as I used it to send my brother my old GPU as a present. I also waited about 2 weeks just to ensure it would work. Any one have any guidance?

I also did make sure my card had the up to date Quiet BIOS firmware and it appears to of already have it as when I try to update via the firmware tool it says I'm running the proper firmware.

Hi @figugly ,

thank you for the detailed information. Regarding the issue where the middle fan spins at high speed randomly, please help confirm the following so we can further analyze:

  1. In GPU Tweak III, set the fan mode to “Manual” and fix the speed (e.g., 30%) to see if the issue still occurs.
  2. If possible, record a video when the issue happens, showing both the GPU Tweak III / HWinfo64 screen and the fan noise, so our backend team can review it. And provide the GPUZ information in the GPU Tweak III
  3. Please ensure that your system BIOS, GPU VBIOS, and the ASUS version of the GPU driver are all updated to the latest version.
  4. Could you clarify whether “no packaging” means the card was purchased without a box, or is there another situation?
  5. Please send us the product serial number via private message for tracking and further handling.

Thank you for your cooperation.

Hey @Aureliannn_ROG,

Thanks so much for the response. I had a good run of a few days where it was no longer doing this. However, today I turned it on and the middle fan was 100% again. I attempted a few things and ended up turning off MSI Afterburner. I am currently using GPU Tweak to control the fans now. I will see if this helps at all. I wasn't able to grab a video as I was in the middle of work. Still a bit concerned :(.

My BIOS on my motherboard is currently up to date. I downloaded the firmware tool for the GPU and it says it is already up to date. I have the latest GPU drivers from Nvidia. Are there separate GPU drivers from ASUS that I should use?

As for the packaging - I purchased the GPU through Best Buy so I did have the box it came in. However, I used the box to send my brother my old GPU as a present. So I no longer have the original packaging. If I were to have to RMA this, could I use a different box to ship it in? Or does it have to be in the original packaging?

Thanks again for your assistance.

Also, I will continue to monitor it and if it occurs again I will record a video to provide. A long with the info via GPU Tweak / GPUZ

Hi @figugly ,

thank you for providing the information. To help our team investigate further, please provide the following:

  1. Monitoring Data & Video at the Time of Issue

    • Using GPU Tweak III, please record the screen when the issue occurs, showing the temperature, fan speed readings, and actual fan noise or video for comparison.

  2. Graphics Driver Version

    • Please update your GPU driver to the latest version from ASUS and check if the issue persists.

  3. Scope of the Problem

    • Is it only the middle fan (Fan 2) that occasionally runs at maximum speed (100%) after boot, while the other fans operate normally?

    • During gaming or stress testing, does the fan speed behave normally?

  4. Packaging & Serial Number

    • Regarding the packaging issue, we will confirm with the relevant team once we receive the above information. If an RMA is needed, our local representative will contact you and provide the shipping instructions.

    • Please also send us the graphics card serial number via private message.

Thank you for your cooperation.

1 - I was able to capture it during the issue and was able to get a video. This was a little different as it actually went away while using GPU Tweak - it doesn't always do this. It usually ignores any fan curve changes. And it will usually go back to 100% while just sitting idle

2 - Driver is up to date

3 - It is only the middle fan (fan 2). All the other fans work normally. I tried to demonstrate this in the video.
 - It's during normal operation, no stress testing / gaming.

4 - Thank you I will send you this info

Hello @figugly ,

Thank you for providing the information. Could you please help confirm whether the graphics card driver has been updated to ASUS version 577.00 and let us know if the issue still occurs? Additionally, we would appreciate it if you could provide a screenshot of the GPU-Z information page in GPU TWEAK III for our reference.
In the meantime, we will escalate this issue to the relevant team for further review. We kindly ask for your patience, and we truly appreciate your cooperation and understanding.

Hey @Aureliannn_ROG ,

I was on version 577.00 originally and that is when the issue started. I have since used DDU to uninstall all the GPU drivers and I installed the latest in hopes that would resolve it. The video I provided was from the most recent incident so that is from when I used the latest driver from Nvidia (580.97). It's hard to know when to have my video ready as the issue is so sporadic. I can go 3-4 boots fine and then it will start doing it.

Here is the GPU-Z information from the video I sent

Just wanted to say I appreciate the assistance. I RMA'd my card and received a replacement. Was slightly worried about it since I've never RMA'd anything before and it was very simple. Thanks again
