5090 ROG Astral OC Dead On Arrival DOA

Hi. I was lucky enough to order a 5090 from local retailer on 30th of January. The card arrived a few days ago and when I tried to install it today, I was only met with disappointment. The card is malfunctioning. After installing the GPU and booting to Windows, I get a Microsoft Basic Display adapter in Device Manager. GPU-Z does not detect the GPU either. Installing Nvidia Drivers fails (even after DDU).

I've tried to re-seat GPU multiple times. I swapped PSU from a Corsair HX 1000I (2021 model) to a HX 1200i (2024 model) with new 12VHPWR cable for the GPU and no dice. The GPU simply won't be detected in the Windows system. I tried flicking the physical switch on the GPU from BIOS 1 to 2 and still not working. I also made sure that I used Gen 4 PCI (not auto) in BIOS on MB.

I guess my card is DoA unfortunately 😞

Sharing my experience here for tips and for others to read.

That’s rotten luck! You’re not using a GPU riser cable or anything?

Hey and appreciate the reply. And no riser used.

Hi @coldice ,

We sincerely apologize for the issue you are experiencing with your RTX 5090 graphics card not being recognized by the system.

To help you troubleshoot the problem, please follow these steps for checking:

  1. Cable connection confirmation: Please ensure that all cables (including graphics card to display, and graphics card to power supply) are securely connected.
  2. BIOS update: Please check if your motherboard BIOS is the latest version. If not, please download and install the latest version.
  3. Slot change test: Please try inserting the graphics card into different PCIe slots to rule out slot issues.
  4. Power supply confirmation: Please confirm that your power supply (PSU) has sufficient power to support the RTX 5090 graphics card. You can refer to the following link to understand the power requirements of the RTX 5090 graphics card: RECOMMENDED_PSU_TABLE.pdf

If you have confirmed the above steps, but the system still cannot recognize the graphics card, considering that you just purchased this product, we recommend that you contact the place of purchase for further return and exchange assistance.

Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.

Hi and thank you for the reply. The card was sent in for RMA with retailer. However they tested tested the card and sent me a notice card did not have any malfunction and ran fine using 3d Mark tests.

I received the GPU back and still the same issue in my pc. i've opened a case with ASUS Customer support. 3080ti works fine. 5090 does not!

This was the test computer specifications:

MB: Gigabyte X870E Aorus PRO ICE

CPU: AMD Ryzen 9 7900X

PSU: Cooler Master MWE 1050W
