Lag spikes when gaming using External Soundcard

So I've been dealing with issues relating to Bongiovi drivers, they cause my system to lag severly when using an audio interface. ( A usb soundcard, in my case, a focusrtite scarlet solo 4th gen). When i'm not using the interface my lag disappear. when I uninstall bongiovi drivers, my lag disappears almost fully (some stutters every so often remain, this is very frustrating).

I've attempted to reinstall my graphics drivers, audio drivers.

tried different performance modes on my gpu and cable connections.

none of the above helped.

Right now I have my headphones plugged into the internal soundcard to avoid more issues. I am also able to play VR with the index without FPS spikes.

I have a rog strix z790-f gaming wifi II motherboard, RTX 4090 GPU and i9-14900kf

After a lot of painstaking troubleshooting and eventually swapping the gpu out and testing, it seems there's something wrong with the strix 4090. I can only reproduce the stutter/lag issues on this GPU. I will probably RMA it where I bought it. I've also experienced a black screen error twice with an nvidia event id 14 and id 0. I've tried different refresh rate monitors, different PSU's, different RAM profiles and XMP off. DDU and reinstall a multitude of different NVIDIA drivers. Update VBIOS, Update and downgrade motherboard bios. none of the above fixed my problem. This is no longer related to audio. this is fine, I just notice there's slight latency spikes on the z790-f gaming wifi 2 motherboard at times. these however could be related to the unstable gpu. There's always the off chance that the motherboard is the problem here. I'll probably RMA the GPU first and test next is the motherboard.

Hi @Xivii

When connecting your other panels, at what point does the issue start occurring?

Have you tried:

  • Connecting each display individually to see if the issue is reproducible.
  • Checking each cable individually.

A program called Latencymon might tell you what's causing the lag.

Download LatencyMon - MajorGeeks

I installed it and ran it for a little over a minute. It's showing the highest reported latency as being the Kernel Mode Driver Framework Runtime, Microsoft Corporation.

I’ve ran latency mon, it seems to sporadically spike to 20000+ not very often but it does happen. and nvidia drivers hang around 1000 depending on what I’m doing. I’ve attempted rolling back nvidia drivers, reset windows, reinstall nvidia drivers, downgrade BIOS version. none of it seemed to help. my random lag spikes remain. At this point I suspect there’s a defective piece of hardware involved. I’ve reset and reinstalled windows a dozen times with no results. Is there a known problem with the Strix 4090oc and strix z790-f gaming WiFi 2 causing these issues? It doesn’t really tell me what driver is spiking to 20000, just that there was an interrupt.

I’ve still been unable to diagnose what’s going on, the lag spikes happen regardless of software installed. At this point I think there’s faulty hardware somewhere in my system. I’ve disabled my ram XMP because it’s slightly too fast for my motherboard. But not long after I still experienced a heavy stutter. My pc will freeze every so often for 1-2 seconds and then goes back to normal. It’s completely random and totally unclear what’s causing it.

I’ve attempted everything regarding software, reinstalled windows and my issue was still present. My issues with bongiovi and static were solved but these frame spikes have not.

at this point, could it be my Corsair RM1000x PSU?
The Corsair ram I doubt is the problem if it’s running below motherboard max

the gpu is a strix OC 4090 and motherboard again is a z790-f gaming WiFi II

Well, there is another program you could run that can check your psu and other components.

The program is OCCT.

Click Download to the right of Personal - OCBASE/OCCT : Free, all-in-one stability, stress test, benchmark and monitoring tool for your PC

Do Stability tests on these components. The timer is set for an hour, it should show errors within 5 minutes if there are any.

Passed all the tests without issues.

I’m not sure I trust doing the power test with the extreme CPU temperatures..? Everything else I can’t get my cpu to pass 60 degrees.
