Project Alternate: PC in a desk scratch build & MODs
Hi all, After what feels like a very long year I have decided to start work on my new desk build. The idea for this desk came to me when i was working on my last desk & at one point I almost started the project again, but I'm glad i didn't
Most people liked the desk & I learned a great deal during the build.
The Project Alternate design slightly changed month by month & I will show some of the other plans & explain why the changes was made. This time I'm hoping to outdo my last desk & hopefully help others in the process.
The desk work is about to start, using mostly MDF, Perspex, clay, metal & glass I plan to build the desk in 3 parts, starting from the bottom, then middle followed by the top section. the tricky parts will be the sharp corners & angles on the edges.
In making the desk in 3 parts it will allow for easy transport from my garden shed to my very small room/office.
I plan to have the 2 reservoirs just under the top shelf so i can see the water flowing by 🙂
have a couple of different layouts for the internal components, but want to wait until the top compartment is built so I can see IRL what looks & works best.
For the specs, I'm upgrading from my trusty i5-2500k to a i7-5820K, due to the CPU upgread I will also be using the new ASUS X99 TUF motherboard & DDR4
This time I will also go with 3 screens at 1440p if possible, or 1X 4K screen, so my HD7970s will also need upgrading to a R9-295x2.
SPECS CPU - i7-5820k MB - ASUS Sabertooth X99 RAM - 32GB Avexir Blitz 1.1 (DDR4) GPU - ASUS R9-295x2 PSU - Cooler Master: V1200 Platinum PSU2 - Cooler Master: GM750W Fans - Cooler Master: Jet flow 120's & Cooler Master Silencio FP120 PWM HDs - Western Digital Green 6TB - Barracudas x2 2TB - Wester Digital Green 1TB SSDs - 2x Samsung EVO850s 250GB (500GB) RADS - 2x Phobya G-Changer 360 RADs V.2 RES - 2x Phobya 450 reservoirs CPU WB - Alphacool NexXxoS XP³ Light PUMP - 2x Alphacool VPP655 GPU WB - Alphacool NexXxoS GPX KB - CM Storm quickfire xti Mouse - CM Storm Reaper

Been a bit busy over the past month, but im back now 🙂 I recently got the 2 finaly items for the build from Cooler Master, a CM Storm Xornet 2 gaming mouse & Swift RX mat. Cheap mouse! £20 or less...
Couple of photos for you to have a look at & iv also uploaded a quick hands on video.
also over the past week my new screen has arrived, I liked the 40" 4K screen so much that iv now gone for a 43" 4K.
I cant go any bigger than this, as it will cause some neck problems in the long term lol Its a better fit for the desk also, as it now spans the total length of the centre top shelf.
I started to make a video for YouTube & realized I still needed to sort my wires out as the KB & Mouse wires was hanging over the front of the desk.
Had a couple of options, go to the sides, back or front going to the sides would mean the mouse & KB would need to be disconnected every time I lift the glass & you could also still see the wires. Same story for the back they would be seen still.
Going with the front meant I had to make a hole in the desk 😞 But this idea was best, wires cant been seen & the KB & mouse can stay on the desk as the glass lifts high enough to get inside to most the components & clean if needed.
The KB will still need to be taken of the desk if I lift the glass all the way back though.
Looks cleaner now, just need to touch up with some black paint.
After completing this build iv gone though 4 screens, at the start I still had my 1440p IPS screen but with the new desk I wanted to use some more of that GPU power & go with 3 screens or 1 4K screen.
As the bigger 4K screens offer more desktop space & higher resolution I decided to go with that.
The 1st screen was a BenQ BL3201PT 4K 32"
very nice build quality, but with other screen on the market with the same specs & 10" bigger I decided to try the next step up AMH A409U 4K 40"
Its also shown in the main photos uploaded last month so I wont post them again. The screen was great, build quality & menu not as good as the BenQ though, but as its the screen Im most bothered about this monitor was better in my eyes & 8" bigger.
Was having some problems with the remote on the AMH, so the seller offered me a Crossover 434 4K 43" instead, cant complain with that 😄 Loving the new screen, best of the 3 4K screens iv had so far.
As I was swapping screens I took a couple of shots without the screen on the desk...
Been sorting though my videos & decided to not use this clip in the final video im working on, so sharing it now to show how the desk top lifts & the way the wires are running.
I did have motor sound but unfortunately I also had some random music in the background that go my vid copyright flagged 😞 so you have to make do with some YouTube tunes lol Sorry.
I need to say thanks to Chris @ CoolerMasterUK, when I asked if it was ok to giveaway some fans I didn't need he said "Sure but lets add some extra bits to the giveaway to help someone get there build of the ground" ... also agreed to post them for me too 😄 And thanks to the reddit admin that are helping with the post.
Iv also completed the final video for the desk build, should give you all a better idea of the overall look and so on.. give it a look when you have a spare 8mins or so. took me ages to get this last vid done lol hope you enjoy!
Awesome video, Just checked it out and commented on YouTube. You have definitely spent some time putting it together.
Hope you have been doing well and have caught up with other "been needing to do's" since finishing the build and video's.
Hey, Thanks for the comments 🙂 I think I have an email from you also? so I will get on to them as soon as I have finished on the forums. Been away for the past month, my 1st holiday in 7 years lol
