Well based on the comments I guess my intonation didn't come across as I intended. The age old readers interpretation vs actual meaning issue.
There's nothing wrong with 3 7970s, I was mocking myself really for making such an unnecessary 'upgrade'.
Performance wise it's a sideways move give or take. When I upgraded my CPU and board I went for the 7970s as they were the best option available but I wanted to wait for the 780s. I had a problem with one of the 3 AMD cards and it's being RMA'd at the moment. When I get the replacement I'll sell the 3 AMD cards on, they're about 4/5 months old so shouldn't be a problem to do and it's still the top end of the AMD lineup.
I prefer the software/driver suite and the 3D output on nvidia cards which is my main reason for changing. That and the cards themselves look a lot nicer in my opinion.
Someone will enjoy the 7970s when I sell them on, maybe even 3 people if no one wants to CrossFire them.
Just to be clear there's nothing wrong with the 7970s
