Menthols Test bench adventures

I moved to a new location this week, still most stuff in boxes, Verizon FIOS has some sweet connection speeds like nothing I have ever seen. signed up for the 75 MB down 35 MB up, test shows I am getting 84 MB down 39 MB up, I like it. I got 2 test benches for my 2 systems before I moved and have been waiting to transfer the hardware until I moved. so this morning I transferred one system onto Top Desk Test Station and got it up and running. I will tackle the other as soon as I go through some boxes to find some parts, what a hassle, pack it up for easy identification and can find everything except what I'm looking for. I took a couple pics with my cell phone, not very good but posting them anyway.
M6E with a 4770K cooled by Corsair H100i for now, with 8 GB of GSkill 2666 mhz Ram and a GTX 680 this should keep me connected till I tear into the CaseLabs and install that hardware on another test bench.

I was hoping the Titan block would work as I have 2 but I have read elsewhere that it will not but EK and several others will have them soon.
The big question being asked is will you be able to flash a ti bios to a reference 780 and enable the extra cores and TMU's

The back of the ti PCB looks different, however the "business side" has the same layout as 780/Titan, at least according to TTL: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g-5PhVANIaQ

Only one way to find out, try the block on the ti 🙂

I doubt that you can flash a 780 to a 780ti. Since they just released the ti they probably just got good enough yields. In other words binned chips. They would have released it a long time ago if the yields were so good that they could waste good gpu's on cheaper cards. But you never know 🙂

Very nice scores btw 🙂

Yes, the BIOS question is there...for the power management features too....wonder if a Titan can become a 780Ti....you know if you want to slum it a bit...

Nice approach about flashing the 780. First thing came to my mind was that too. Marketing sometimes is more powerful than bad yielding to sell a product in lower prices and get the market. Also let's not forget the 3Gbytes of less memory that gives a nice price margin on the cheap side. Anyway, it would be interesting to see with my own eyes the results of such an action. Bonus hidden cores, even with less memory (usually necessary for resolutions higher than 1080p), are always welcome 🙂

First set of benchmarks with R9 290X stock clocks card in Uber bios mode, using ASUS GPU Tweak, Power Target set to 150% all other settings default. 3930K @5200mhz Memory @ 2400MHZ
First 2 Benchmarks with drivers at default setting Tessellation on to see difference between performance settings with Tessellation off.

3DMARK = 10037

HeavenX = 3105.901

All following with driver settings set to performance, Tessellation off

3DMARK = 10586

Heaven X = 3773.57

3D 11 = 16461

Vantage = 49526

Unigine Valley = 2723

Catzilla = 11121

Yes I benched a couple that we don't usually bench on these forums just for comparison purposes

So far I like this AMD card, I do not know how much headroom it has for overclocking or if water cooling it will cool it enough to get higher clocks, at stock voltages it does 1100 on the core and 1500 on the memory very easily but when I tried 1200 on the core it froze on me, with fan speed set to 100% which is louder than any GPU fan I have ever heard, by a very large margin, I mean really really loud and very very hot, you could cook carne asada and tortillas on this thing

The 780 ti is out for delivery, I have an SSD ready to go

for the 780ti I set drivers to all performance settings I used PrecisionX, set boost to max 106 left clocks at factory settings

3DMARK = 10994

3D11 = 15878

Catzilla = 15326

Can you believe I forgot to run Vantage, tomorrow

Both cards are beasts, results so far surprised me somewhat compared to the reviews I read, I expected Nvidia to beat out in 3D11 and AMD to win 3DMARK, I didn't expect Nvidia to do quit so good in Unigine benchmarks, Core and memory are clocked higher on the Nvidia card though, going to be a lot of back and forth with these cards, now I have to clock as high as I can and get some runs submitted on hwbot. definitely need blocks on these they both run hot, the Nvidia card is much quieter

Good job, Menthol, keep them coming...

The real question for me is the overclockability of those cards... that's where I would expect AMD to beat Nvidia...

I believe they both need better cooling and voltage control, especially the AMD as it will run at 95 degrees compared to Nvidia at 85, both way to hot for me. I have a lot more testing to be fair to both cards

Yes great Menthol....very interesting to see what the same person can get out of each card with the standard tweaks and tricks...very interested to see the watercooled results too...

Boost feature seems to work fairly well, with the factory bios, setting power target to the max of 106 the Precision X monitor shows the core boosted and stays at 1124 straight line no fluctuation at all and power target would hit 106 during the benchmark, that was with zero offset to core or memory

That's excellent scores for stock clocks Menthol. I can imagine what you will hit with water and OC 🙂
