800D air project

Well going to have a bash at my first proper case modding. I have a few nice idea but after having a browse on what people are doing here maybe not so good 😮

Like many 800d owners i was disapointed when i came to realise the 800d is in fact pants for air. I always wanted to have a nice sli setup and the 800d in its standard form is no good from what i can see. I just love the presence of the 800d so going to another case is just something i do not want to do. Custom Watercooling is just not an option for as i have no experience in it at all. Its not that i dont think i could do it i just dont want the hastle of messing it up, getting a leak and frying my components. Its just something i do not even want to contemplate dealing with so please do not suggest it 😛

I got my hands on a couple of nice matrix plat 580's so decided its time to give this a try

Im currently running an 800d but bought another 800d on ebay a while back and it came with a thermaltake toughpower 1000w, nzxt fan controller and a few corsair sp120 fans. After selling they parts the 800d has cost me next to nothing and my original intentions were to refurbish it and sell on.

After getting the 580's though i decided i may aswell sell the 800d im using (good condition) and mod the other one which is a bit beat up in the first place if im honest. The feet need to be put back on (probably get them welded on) 2 of the hotswap bays are missing and the windowed door mechanism is broken.

I trade in used parts so have a few different options at my disposal and here some rough plans for the build.

cpu - cant make my mind up between i5 3570k@4.5 or i7 2700k@4.7 either will be cooled with an h100i

motherboard - this is set in stone and its the sabertooth z77, love this board

memory - 16gb (4x4) G.Skill Ripjaws 1600 mhz in red. Not fused on changing these and will do if it will benefit performance but they go well with the red/black theme im going for

gfx - torn between 2x gtx 580 gtx matrix platinum or just selling them and getting a single 280x matrix and another one in the future which kind of defeats the whole point of this build if i go for single gpu just now but at the end of the day i plan on keeping this case for years to come

psu - ax850/ocz zx1000w. If im honest i prefer the corsair but i think 850w is cutting it fine for my requirements so will probably end up going with the ocz

Case Fans - Where do i start jeez. Well to start off im going to mod the case in a way that the gpu are in there own compartment seperated from the top and bottom in a bid for good flow and possibly make it as air tight as possible. At the front either going to go for 2x200mm or 3x140 and possibly double those figures. Had an idea of a 200mm at the front housed in an acrylic tube of the same diameter going from front to back and be about 250mm long with another 200mm at the other end in a kind of push pull scenario. Theory is i will beable pull cold in from the front and blast it directly on the gpus. If this sounds like total nonsence feel free to ridicule me

I apologize for my horrible paint skills 😄 but heres an idea of what im going for
29700
The 5.25 drive bay area will also be getting removed

On the other door at the back of the motherboard im thinking to cut a 140mm hole in the motherboard backplate (if you call it that) without disturbing the board mounting points (theres enough room ive checked) to drag hot air out of the case from there. However as the board will be inbetween the exhaust and gpu i dont know if this will make any difference. I know i could just put some fans on the window but that would ruin the looks IMO. I want to beable to see those matrix load leds 😉

This is a work in progress and wont be completed for some time i suspect so feel free to chuck any advice/ideas regarding anything about the build. Here is a few pics of my work so far

Removed hot swap, cage area below that and front panel

Cutting out one of the bays in hot swap and relocating it roughly here
29696

Front panel with power and usb being relocated beside hotswap here

Originally i had planned on putting a dvd drive right exactly where the stock position is for the front panel but toying with the idea of putting it beside the hotswap facing the same way. Depends if the dvd gets in the way of where i want to put the h100 or indeed the front intake fans themselfs

Not decided on the finish im going to have either so again feel free to chuck some ideas at me. Thinking about wrapping the inside of the case with red/black carbon effect vinyl wrap and possibly do the outside white with red/white lighting

Thanks for taking the time to read this and any help/opinions will be greatly appreciated

Cheers
Terry

I like the case all the room you'll ever need.
Current: MSI Xpower Gaming Titanium | 7700K | G Skill Ripjaws V 3000 16Gb | 960 EVO 500Gb | Intel 730 480Gb | Seasonic 1000 Platinum |
NZXT X62 | Acer XB270HU | EVGA 1080 ti FTW3

Secondary: R4BE | 4930K | G.SKILL 2400 16GB | Corsair AX 1500i
Intel 730 240GB + 480GB | EVGA GTX780 ti sli kpe | Custom H20

I love it abvolt, never looked back since i got my first one. Only down side to it being so large is i think it looks empty with only 1 gpu in it!
