Sudden framerate drops. Computer seems fine and optimal!

I've recently been experiencing dips in framerate during the last week across all my games, even things that don't take up much power or space like Gone Home. I'm confused because this is happening on a two-month old ASUS gaming laptop which was working perfectly fine almost a week ago!

Solutions I've tried:

  • Making sure the battery is connected

  • Checking my security for malware

  • Deleting heaviest mods (this was before I'd discovered it effected all games beyond Skyrim)

  • Deleting unneeded save files

  • Restarting the laptop

  • Updating GeForce drivers

Could anyone recommend other solutions to try? The hiccups proceeded a few days of a heat wave in my house, but everything else is working fine and my temperature is remaining fair. It started exactly when I tried to play Skyrim and update SWTOR at the same time, causing a freeze which I had to pull the harddrive out and restart to fix.

Yes, after the license agreement check the box that says advanced/custom install and check the box that says perform a clean installation. If you do not use 3D, Nvidia audio or Geforce experience, uncheck everything except the driver and PhysX.

I just reinstalled, restarted the computer, and tested my games 3 separate times and its still lagging as much as it has been :(. any other suggestions? id really like to avoid taking the computer to somewhere that might charge to take a look, and it doesnt seem like a hardware issue since its only effected my games (as far as I can tell)

You could try a system restore if that doesn't help then you could try a system recovery. If either one of these does not fix you, I would suggest calling Asus tech support.

System Restore - Click Start, All programs, Accessories, System tools, here you will find the system restore.

System Recovery - If your laptop has the partition recovery option, start up your computer, tap F9 and follow the system recovery instructions. This will remove everything you installed on It and put it back like it was the day bought it. You will have to reinstall your games and programs after performing the system recovery.

Before trying the two options listed above are you trying to play your games at maximum settings? If you are, try lowering some settings, turn off antialising if you have it enabled and lower the screen resolution a little.
