I did a clean win7 install on my HP G7 with an SSD, and it screams compared to this ROG G750JM. Are there any 'must use' ASUS apps I should reinstall with win8.1 if I go SSD?. I've disabled almost everything, and this thing is still slower than I expected.

Just clone your old hdd to the ssd, or image the hdd and restore to the ssd. No need to reinstall everything. Windows will re-initialize the ssd and all of your setups will remain intact.
