I installed Windows 8.1 in my new SSD (Kingston V300 240gb) yesterday and wonder if its true that it defrags even tho its an SSD ?

Or if i need to change some settings so that it trims instead of defrags?

Asus G74SX

EDIT: Forgot to ask since this is my first SSD do i need to download Intel rapid storage technology? if so can anyone post a link?

No SSD do not defrag.
Drivers are available at Asus Support Downloads
Window 8.1 support TRIM and that should be automatically defaulted. I believe that 64bit systems not sure if a 32 bit system would work?
My Samsung and Intel SSD come with a support program to handle the set up and Trim for systems that don't support Trim are you sure you haven't missed installing the Kingston software? I have no idea never seen a Kingston SSD

I was little unclear meant that if windows detects and sense the ssd and trim instead of defrag.

Ok is there any way of knowing for sure? It doesnt say in defragment and optimize.
I have 64bit and i dont think that anyone else here have a 32bit system either 🙂

Ok I think theres a program to download on the website but havent downloaded i yet.

haha then youre lucky.. the day after i placed my order i saw that they have been replacing parts so its slower but i dont know i havent had a ssd before
so i dont notice but im gonna download a benchmark software later and check read and write mbs.

Since Windows 7 SP 1 64 bit window has recognize SSD and Implemented Trim for that drive Rather than De Frag. Right click on the drive select properties/tools/Optimize and defragment/ open Optimize. Your SSD should show up as Solid State.

The windows 8 defrag will mostly perform trim to optimize the SSD, but if the SSD does get defragmented enough (around 10% I think), it will actually get defragged. But since this is very seldom it does more goof than any harm:

Hu why would it get defraged att 10% ? So i need to check daily/often if it has been defraged ?
I read that already and thought it be safer to ask here.

Well I don't know about anyone else notebook running win 7 SP 1 or Win 8.1 but my Samsung 850 Pro have no issues with fragmenting. Garbage collecting goes on anytime your notebook is Idle. There is a lot of misinformation around about SSD. SSD are now mainstream and very reliable. I still over provision to give Trim room for quick garbage collection but its not necessary the firmware for the SSD work very well with windows. And these 850 Pro I have are guaranteed for 10 years so I know I'll still use them until the technology gets to too old. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trim_(computing)

A little tip to see if trim is enabled in Windows 8.1.

Simple steps to do. Open up the elevated Command Prompt and copy and paste or type

fsutil behavior query disabledeletenotify

And if 0 is showing that means trim is enabled and 1 means not.

If not enabled then copy and paste or type. To disabled, same as below except replace 0 with 1.

fsutil behavior set disabledeletenotify 0
