G75VW with Windows 8 re-install

I recently put Ubuntu on my system with USB. I did this because my windows 8 was totally corrupt and wouldn't even let me boot into the recovery mode.

So Windows 8 seems to be totally gone from my system and I put Ubuntu on through USB.

The guys at best buy tell me the windows system and keys are installed into the mother board. All I need to do is re-install windows and it will register itself with the keys in the motherboard.

So that is a bit risky, I guess I still have to buy windows 8? I've tried making a bootable usb with Windows 8 ISO's but I get a "Missing operating system" dos prompt.

I really don't know what to do. I don't suppose a Windows 8 recovery USB will work?

I still can't boot from disc, either. I guess my DVD Drive is messed up, I already tried the remove and clean fix for that as well.

I had Windows 7 and it said it was missing drivers.

Let me reference an http://rog.asus.com/forum/showthread.php?28758-GUIDE-G55-G75-Upgrade-Notes&country=&status=older thread, that was put together out of other threads. I would suppose that the issue you are experiencing is that your system is or was set up UEFI or you have change it to BIOS MBR.
Rufus will make you a good UEFI bootable Install media.
You should download the latest win 8.1 ISO 64 bit Core. Yes this install will see your BIOS product key and activate for you.

I would not recommend installing window 8 and then upgrading to 8.1. its is not nessary your embedded key will work to activate 8.1.
