Asus Z97-PRO GAMER Registering wrong CPU temp

Hi,

A quick disclaimer, I know my motherboard is not strictly ROG but all the tech is lifted from ROG boards and the software and drivers used to control it including AI Suite 3 are ROG branded so I thought this would be the best place to start for some help before officially contacting ASUS support.

The issue I am having is that the motherboard is providing a very wrong value for CPU temp. Normally this wouldnt be an issue, however this temp is what the board uses to control the fans. I am using speedfan and/or HWmonitor to measure temps, and this is where I am seeing the difference. At idle, my core temps hover between 25-30C, and my cpu temp registers at about 28 which is fine. However when putting some load on it the core temps shoot up but the CPU temp doesnt. For example, under prime95 small ffts my core temps shoot up to 80-85C, where as the CPU temp measured by the board slowly rises up to about 40-42C and stays there. This has the knock on effect of not spinning up the fans, as the board thinks the cpu is barely warm when infact prime torture test are roasting it. I have got around this problem so far by controlling my fan speeds manually as I know what temps I should be getting and am easily obtaining that with manual control, but I would like the sense of security knowing that if I stop manually setting it then my fans will keep my cpu cool. Currently they do not, and I am not sure whether this is an issue with the ASUS board reading the sensor wrong, or the sensor actually being defective in my CPU. Any help or advice is much appreciated. My specs below:

ASUS PRO-GAMER motherboard
Intel i7 4790K
CM Hyper 212 EVO Cooler
16gb Crucial Memory
512gb Crucial MX100 SSD
EVGA GTX 980 SC ACX2

I have the same board. I pasted with IC Diamond and use EPU program. I read my temps with All CPU Gadget from Add Gadgets. This gadget reads the temps on all 8 threads on my Core I 7 My temps match up with Hwinfo64 sensors. I haven't heard of this problem with this board still it your reading Overall CPU Temp that much Higher than the individual core temps? Perhaps a BIOS upgrade might solve it?
My Idle temp are in the high 20's low 30's My ambient is 24C, My temps and fan speed are sync good and I can use the EPU gadget to run my fans Quite or medium or hard. Burn In Test 100% CPU my temps only get up to mid 50's.
I don't have an answer you could contact Intel support to see if it is possible for the CPU to put out the incorrect over all temp? of course you can deal with ASUS tech support too but I think you'll get a more compressive answer from Intel

Thankyou very much for the reply. I have updated the BIOS to the latest version which doesnt change anything unfortunately. The issue is that the cpu temp is reading much lower than the individual core settings. Cores will be at around 80C while cpu temp says 40C. I will consider contacting Intel, thankyou for the suggestion

I just spoke to intel customer support who told me that different readouts for cores and CPU temp are fine as long as they are both low. They said CPU temp can be up to as much as 20 degrees C lower than cores due to sensor position. I dont think this is my problem because my temps are reliably much lower than that but if they assure me its fine I will believe them. Also I have another issue where my core temps vary by up to 12 degrees C, Intel told me they have seen chips which can vary by up to 25 degrees C per core which is completely fine according to them. So they are telling me everything is ok with my system, I think I might just play a few more games and stop worrying so much about my cpu temps 🙂

Have you installed the AI suite 3 software, in that package is EPU it will let you set your CPU and FAN speed quickly for what you are doing at any time.
I usually keep mine on Auto for CPU and Silent for fans If I'm doing some thing that is bringing up the CPU Temp I just use the gadget to increase my fan speeds

I also use Addgadgets All CPU Meter Gadget I can see my CPU Load and Temps in real time on all 8 threads.

Thanks very much for the suggestion. I do indeed use AISuite 3 as the fanXpert section of it is the best fan Manager I have ever used. Unfortunately AISuite is also displaying the cpu temp wrong, never displaying a temp higher than 40C when my cores are up at 60/70/80C stress testing. This makes it impossible to have automatic fan control unless I have 0%-100% fan power mapped to 30C - 40C which is ridiculous. I currently use fan Xpert to choose low or high power settings depending on whether I am playing games. This is not ideal as when Im away from my computer some process could well start running something on my cpu, and I wont be there to switch the fans to 100% 😞

Hi

I seem to have the same problem with my new Z-97 Pro Gamer: CPU sensor on the mobo shows temps around 30 degrees with not much change while Open Hardware Monitor and Realtemp report core (4690K) temperatures over 70 degrees during Prime95 stress testing. In addition Open Hardware Monitor shows CPU Package temp under the core temps that is correct. I just installed my new system from scratch and updated the BIOS + latest drivers.

Same processor + my previous gigabyte mobo worked as expected and the temperature from CPU sensor was the same than Open Hardware Monitor CPU Package showed and they were both in line with the individual core temperatures.

I only got the Pro Gamer yesterday and I'm already considering RMA...

I don't know if could use Speedfan to monitor all core temperatures and use them to control the CPU cooler, but this would just be a workaround to the actual problem.

Well then it appear you have a defective mother board. it happens just take it back to the store you got it from and get another one.

Same problem here.

Again, it must be a hardware issue, I am running a Z97 Pro and a Z97 Pro Gamer both have no issues with temps I run the Ad Gadget CPU Usage Gadget and have verified my temps with Hwinfo64. Verify that the temps are incorrect in your UEFI BIOS If so then either the CPU is not sending the correct information to your MOBO or your MOBO is not reading the correct information from your CPU
