Ever since I bought my secondhand Z97 Pro a couple of years ago, installing/upgrading the drivers for my Radeon R9 390 GPU has been an absolute nightmare. I somehow managed to get an obsolete driver to work originally, and somehow managed to get it updated to Radeon Software Version 19.9.2, but every driver install since then has locked up my computer at about 90% of the hardware detection phase. I recently tried to install fresh Windows on an M.2 NVMe with the same result - the Radeon installer locks up the PC.
Today I pulled the Radeon GPU out of the machine and tried the installer hoping to find out if the problem lay in the GPU or the PC, and had the same problem. The installer froze about 90% of the way through hardware detection.
I've tried different installer versions (version/complete/minimal), clean boots of Windows DDU, AMD's driver cleanup tool and nothing has the slightest effect on the problem. Google returns 1,970,000 results for "Radeon installer crashes PC" (small wonder), but of the dozens of posts I've read so far, nothing has improved the problem.
Does anyone have any suggestions for how I might troubleshoot the issue and/or get a driver update to run on my machine?
