Radeon HD 7970 DC2 TOP - Issues

Hi Everyone,

I just wanted to post my experiences with my first iteration of this card just so that others were aware of some signs that they may have a defective card.

Windows 8:
Yes, I know this card doesn't even have preview drivers yet, but oddly it worked best under Windows 8. The issues I encountered were limited to random BSOD after the system sat idle for long periods of time (even with power saving features turned off like turning of the monitors and sleep). It seemed to run games just fine. The only odd-ball thing I noticed off the hop was the factory set clock when I opened up Overdrive was the 3D clock was set to 600 MHz. Even after that things were okay except for the random BSOD.

Windows 7:
This is where things went south fast. Running a game like Battlefield 3 or Mass Effect 3 at 1 GHz (factory overclock) resulted in a crash (3 screens, 1 different colour per screen) as soon as the GPU's 3D clock kicked in and the game was going to go full screen. I checked voltages, I checked card temperatures, everything seemed okay (except for the well documented VRM issue) with the card. My system voltages are stable, temperatures are nice and cool (my CPU generally only hits 40c if it is really hot in the room.) I disconnected devices, tried with only one monitor, no banana. So I downclocked the GPU to 925 MHz. Battlefield 3 now loads as does Mass Effect 3. Battlefield 3 does crash after 15-20 minutes with a black screen crash, but I was expecting that to no doubt be another issue un-related to the card itself.

So what am I doing? I'm taking it back to the place of purchase and praying that they have a newer revision of the card with the VRM cutout on the backplate and will see if the store will test it before I take it home.

do you have a spare GPU to put into your PC then while this one is returned ?

Has anyone given this a try? I'm thinking of doing this for fixing the crashing. I'm getting desperate and I doubt RMAing will do anything to help. They will most likely just resend the same GPU back like last time..

I appear to be stable at stock clocks now with the latest BIOS for the P8Z68-V Pro/GEN3. At least, 3Dmark11 and Diablo 3 are rock solid. I'm also running the Catalyst 12.6 Beta drivers.

simple matter of fact is this.

the card is worthless and oone of the worst if not the worse card i have ever owned in my life in every way shape or form. also the support is shocking and further more im discusted at the ammount of complaint by peole with no means to solve the problem by Asus themselve's

there are atlest 10 + people here with issues that asus havent or wont solve, RMA doesnt count as we get the same stuff back and still doesnt work. what you guys do to test if it works or not by just plugging it in and turning it on and see it boot then say its all good doesnt copy the problems we have and when we actually get them.

ive done more to help people on this forum that asus have done full stop in the qhole company, no offence marshallR but you have posted and already answered n stuff but its things we tried and and ive already pointed out to people.

ASUS SORT IT NOW OR GET YOUR SUPPORT TEAM TO CONTACT EACH PERSON TO SORT IT FULLY NOT A PISS ASS SOLUTION I MEAN SORT IT !

EITHER THAT OR IM SEEING MY TRANDING STANDARDS OFFICER NEXT MONTH FOR BREACH OF SALE COS YOUR TAKING THE PISS WITH ME AND US ALL !

Johan1981

your not alone with this is nothing to do with your pc or the bios or drivers its Asus and the fact the card doesnt work right but they dont give a ****.

its nothing short of being pathetic

You think it is 100% hardware related and nothing to do with drivers (for as far as you can tell that is)? Or atleast can't be fixed by updates in the near future?
