R9 280x DirectCU II Top Artifacts!!

HEllo i just upgraded from an 7870 to the R9280X-DC2T-3GD5

I followed these steps for drivers

1. Ran Catalyst control center from C:/ AMD and did a custom uninstall. Removed all
2. Restarted computer
3. Ran Driver Fusion and deleted everything from AMD
4. Restarted computer
5. Installed latest 13.12 R9 drivers from AMD site

I get artifacts (shapes, lines , squares) flashing everywhere in screen , when in Chrome, in Dota 2 and Planetside 2. Haven't tested in more games , but I guess it will be the same.
The card will need a replacement? I have a Corsair CX600 , AMD FX 8350, Corsair Vengeance 2x4gb 1600 mhz
I read somewhere about GPU bios update. I ran the GPU ASUS TWEAK software that came in with the CD, and i tried to update something but i got a message ROM programming fail. But then it seemed to installed the update and forced me to restart the computer.
But still i get artifacts.
What do you suggest?

Ok guys these are the results of my tests with my new replacement card so far. The card arrived last friday, but during the weekend i didn't have much time to test it out.

As you can see in this photo the card's serial number starts with E5Y, so it must be a much recent card.

Right after i installed the card, i checked its info using MSI Afterburner (Asus GPU Tweak wouldn’t let me see the VRAM Voltage) and the VRAM voltage is at 1.5V instead of 1.6V of the previous card, just as you can see in the next screenshot (MSI Afterburner uses mV, so you will see 1500mV that is the same as 1.5V).

The game i have been playing the most is Sniper Elite V2, this game when played with my previous card the artifacting was very noticeable, like you can see in this video i recorded with fraps.

I played this game for 4 straight hours - i didn't see any artifacts !
The other game i have tried was Far Cry 3, played around 2 hours and didn't see any artifacts. I also played Fifa 14 but no artifacts, about 1 hour of gameplay. Today i played around 2 hours of Bioshock Infinite and no artifacts.

Things are looking good so far, but i'll keep looking for artifacts during this week and also try other games.

This looks good.

Regarding voltage reading I'm not sure if voltage on this slider is correct. You can also check voltage in afterburner monitor on the right side. If memory voltage is not visible, you can enable it in settings. How much is it?

You're right the memory voltage on the slider is incorrect. On the monitor shows 1.6V.

I have been playing all day and i haven't seen a single artifact. I tried BF3 too and nothing. I might install and try some more games until the end of the week. But so far so good, i hope it stays this way forever.

anyone else got a E3Y? hmm seems like the E5Y cards are doing fine.
guess I might have to push for a 770GTX 4GB instead

I have the E3Y batch which i received after RMA and i haven't seen any artifacting so far. Then again i haven't played games that much because of no free time and tough job.

But last Saturday night i played Homefront (old game) for 5 hours continuously and ended it while playing it on ultra without any nonsense of any kind. Also keep in mind that i live in India where my ambient temperature is quite high. When i tested my card i turned off my AC and played games for some hours at room temperature 42ºC, so my PC's air cooling wasn't great. But normally my room temperature is around 18-24ºC, which is cool.

I see some guys are complaining about GTA4, i have that game so will test this game as well. When do you guys receive graphical corruption? I say after a few minutes?

If you have issues, just ask for refund and buy something else, if possible. This is the easiest option. Good luck to all of you.

^This.

I was wondering: Did anybody try to flash the 280X DCII (non TOP) BIOS to TOP edition?

I tried. Still got artifacts. The multimeter reads 1.6v on vRam.

Removed the heatsink, cleared all traces of thermal paste from the GPU and re-applied

… and loose warranty, since you will break the seal on a screw.

i have one, and not have problems

My card is a e2y, after adding the 2mm heatsinks to the vrm's my system has been a lot more stable, i can atleast play games now for a few hours without a problem, and if i do get tearing i just alt-tab and it fixes it for a while, 1025/1500 settings.

Hi all! 🙂

Soo... I've been watching this thread for quite a while, searching for a fix for this GPU mess and i finally decided to make an account here.
I have R9 280X DCII Top batch E3Y and while i get no "real" artifacts i sometimes get a black square somewhere on my screen and it's really annoying.

The only thing that somewhat worked for me was OC'ing the GPU memory by 25mhz to 1625mhz. When i lower it to 1500mhz i noticed that black square appeared a lot quicker than with default mem freq. so i tried oc'ing it a bit and it takes a lot longer for the square to appear, if at all. Weird, right?

I guess the memory voltage really is too high. It sure looks like it. When i tried oc'ing GPU mem by 50 mhz the black square was gone but some games started artifacting after somewhat longer play sessions.

I was wondering: Did anybody try to flash the 280X DCII (non TOP) BIOS to TOP edition? I think the non TOP version doesn't have this problems because the mem is at default speed and voltage. I wanted to try it but i'm really afraid of doing it cause i searched the net but didn't find any thread about anybody trying it so i really don't know what would happen.
Maybe it would work? It should work, right? It's the same card only with lower clocks?

ASUS, please fix this mess!!! Lower the goddamn memory voltage to 1.5 or 1.55 so people could at least downclock the GPU memory and somewhat fix this!

Yeah that's weird... I believe here in this forum no one tried that approach, flashing bios that were not made for this specific card is a dangerous thing and the probability of bricking it is very high, i think most of the peolpe are not confortable doing that to a $350 card. My E5Y card is doing fine, i have been playing a lot of different games without any issues.
