R9 280x DirectCU II Top Artifacts!!

HEllo i just upgraded from an 7870 to the R9280X-DC2T-3GD5

I followed these steps for drivers

1. Ran Catalyst control center from C:/ AMD and did a custom uninstall. Removed all
2. Restarted computer
3. Ran Driver Fusion and deleted everything from AMD
4. Restarted computer
5. Installed latest 13.12 R9 drivers from AMD site

I get artifacts (shapes, lines , squares) flashing everywhere in screen , when in Chrome, in Dota 2 and Planetside 2. Haven't tested in more games , but I guess it will be the same.
The card will need a replacement? I have a Corsair CX600 , AMD FX 8350, Corsair Vengeance 2x4gb 1600 mhz
I read somewhere about GPU bios update. I ran the GPU ASUS TWEAK software that came in with the CD, and i tried to update something but i got a message ROM programming fail. But then it seemed to installed the update and forced me to restart the computer.
But still i get artifacts.
What do you suggest?

Same problem for me and other italian people who just bought this card.. How can Asus continue to fabricate and sell broken gpu like these? i just want to know from Asus if they are working to fix it via software or if the only option here is to RMA the card (if the seller accept it back). I've got 8 days to decide if keep it and wait for something i don't even know or if RMA the card.
So please, just tell us if it's a software or a hardware problem so we can know for sure that we can wait a fix.

I can confirm I too have the artifact problem out of the box. Relieved to see there's a vBIOS update to rectify the problem, update the vBIOS from 15.39 to 15.41 with the same results, tried driver versions 13.12 from ATI and from ASUS, tried 14.1 beta with the same results.

RMA it at the store, got a 1 to 1 replacement. Out of the box came with vBIOS 15.41, tried drivers 13.12. Sadly artifacts still persist. Worried that it might be problems with other hardware since 2 GPU came with the same problems. Happy and sad at the same time when I discovered many people also face the same problems, in the end with so many complaints and the fact that ASUS release a BIOS update that suggest to solve the artifacts issue, it is my opinion that it is a GPU problem.

Strangely most reviews I've read before getting this card didn't mention anything about this. Now I'm required to bring back the GPU to the store for them to troubleshoot the problem, I hope they see it as well otherwise I'll have to live with this defect and I'll probably get a refund or go with NVIDIA, I'm just tired with AMD already.

RMA is unlikely to solve the issue. Better is to swap the card for the non-top version as that one seems to run just fine.

I used to hear the issue is because VRAM is running at 1.6V on this card, but according to MSI Afterburner mine is running at 1.5V. This is with vBIOS 15.41 and Catalyst 13.251. Even when I underclock to 1500 MHz I still occassionally get artifacts.

Temp usually doesn't go higher than 75 degrees. Only OCCT pushes it to 83 degrees. PSU is a Seasonic M12II 620W. So, that's a non issue as well.

OCCT in error check mode always reports errors too. I have artifacts in Heaven benchmark as well but not as bad as the ones I usually get in-game (World of Tanks/ War Thunder). If I do get artifacts I have to restart the game, tabbing to the desktop and back doesn't help.

I'm really dissapointed because when the artifacts are not there the card just runs really well. I'm quite sure this will be my last AMD card and apparently ASUS doesn't stand as much for quality (anymore) as I used to think.

Yea I really do like the performance of it also, but just frustrated now as I can't enjoy using it, not sure If I'll try for to RMA for the 3rd time, but will probably just go green (NVIDIA GTX 770), tempted to get R9 290 but I'm just not confidence with the R9 series anymore..

After 1 month , i finally decided to get a refund , because the cards are not on stock anymore and i would have to wait to get the replacement for a long time.
So im going to add some money and go for a gigabyte gtx 770 OC 4gb.
I cant believe how ASUS allowed this to happen. Really bad for their reputation. They are supposed to be a big name. But since they allowed it, they deserve it now.
They should compensate for this somehow, but this wont happen. For example give people that had a problem with the directCU ii top , a better model like matrix. But those things happen only in science fiction.
I would be left for 1 month without a GPU (which means kind of no PC) , but i was really really lucky since the person i would sell my old GPU, didnt buy it yet . 1 month without a PC. I can't imagine that, since i spend 8-9 hours per day on it. So that would cost me about 10 euros per day in Internet cafes. An amount of 300-400 euros for 1 month. And i cant imagine the 10 days i was really sick and stayed home , being without a PC .
Anyway they lost a customer and ill make sure this issue will get mentioned to many forums. 😄

Yes I agree, I'm still using my second replacement until I bring it back to the store and probably have to wait for a long time to get another, I hope they will refund me or allow me to get another, same problem 2 times in a row out of the box, this is unacceptable ASUS. Time to to dig for my first GPU the 7900GS, hope it still works.. lol

I have one ASUS R9 280x DCII Top and I´m not getting any sort of artifacts (it´s even paired with another 7970). Are u guys using a 1080 or a 1440 display? Don´t forget that for 1440 you should switch your graphic card´s to Dual-DVI (losing one display port) - that small plastic piece on the edge of the card.

Are these games running on DX11? DX9 or even DX10 are know to inflict major loss on performance/quality!

Don´t OC your card manually (use only Overdrive).

i have this card 3 weeks ..... first week i saw too many artifacts ..... so i start to make lot of changes in the system . After a lot of efforts so many efforts so i cant see artifacts no more after 3 weeks i done this thinks :

1. first off all the (THE) operating system Windows 8.1 Enterprise N x64 (why i that , i use all os win 7 , win sp1 ultimate , win 8 , win 8.1 pro , all the same artifacts ..... Windows 8.1 Enterprise N free of media players free of updates and driver solution , put off automatic updates for hardware put off all .... make updates until january last day for windows i mean (no new updates needed after february)
2. second drivers for the card from dvd (THE DVD) of the card that come with it . The original dvd yes no beta drivers no no .... 13.2 no 14.1 just from the dvd . take effort and put everything from the dvd on your pc .
3. third asus gpu tweak from the dvd again not from site from the dvd
4. fourth no vbios update not even think to download it .
5. fifth important no further updates dont update your bios better in default setting for the gpu most settings.... all frameworks and direct x install , also catalyst make it in default settings too .... let catalyst identify ur monitor not windows !! important
6. i play all games also benchmarks correct , also metro last night benchmarks , tell if u want to see some of these . i run games from games exe so no other programme conflict with catalyst . like evolve . I run games with all their last updates full graphics if the game is old i run the x86 exe .... if it new x64 exe yes this is big difference.

ok i think thats all and thats all for my system i dont give hope . sorry for my english im from greece . 🙂 good luck

Sorry to tell you this but the problem is 90% hardware related, so whatever you do in software level you will get artifacts in the end. Maybe yours is in the 10% portion which means you had software conflicts or something software related but I doubt. Time will tell. As for my end artifacts still exists even in videos and desktop. I'll stick with the card for now due to no stock in my country and I might RMA it when stock roll out again.
