Multiple fan failures on my R9 280x's

I'm seeing a lot of fan failures on my cards. I've had to RMA two cards that both had fan failures and stopped hashing correctly. It's taken two months to finally get one advanced RMA, and I had to send the other card BACK to the factory again because it was returned to me with the same bad fans I sent it in for, plus it won't hash without crashing.

I have (15) Asus R9 280x's, and today I've discovered that FOUR more fans have failed on 4 other cards. That makes for a total 9 fan failures out of the 30 fans on my Asus cards. The failures aren't limited to a specific rig, or a particular fan. 3 of my rigs were built with Asus cards, and have seen failures in cards in each rig.

They either spin slow, or are so stiff they don't spin at all. There is so little spare lubrication in the fan bearings they are dying left and right. I've been trying to find replacements from anywhere I can get them, but the size isn't common (93mm?), and the Asus store doesn't carry them or won't sell them to me.

OTOH, I have 5 cards from another manufacturer that have been running without issue, and no fan failures. The sample size is smaller, but I saw my first fan failure on an Asus card within two weeks of using them. If there are any Asus reps that follow these forums, I could really use some assistance. With the headaches of just dealing with two RMAs, I really don't want to send these cards back unless they stop hashing. I've put about $9K into Asus cards, and with the warranty service being what it is, I'm seriously regretting my choice.

Well, I just got done exchanging emails with one of their reps, including sending him a video of the problem.

Perhaps I'm misreading the replies, but I get the distinct impression that they consider it an issue on my end because I'm using more than one card at a time in the same machine. Although they are willing to honor the warranty, they do not seem to be concerned beyond that. It's incredibly infuriating, because I'm not having problems in my rigs with other vendor's cards. That said, my lesson is well learned and I know who to buy from and vice versa.

Started to have this issue on my 280x. One of the two fan is unable to start by itself and does a strange noise

Hey DarkKnight, I got the block in from EK. It was really easy to install. The hardest part was adding it to the loop. At full usage I am staying around 42C. I knew that I would like adding it to the loop. I just hate how Asus is handling people with this issue. I have a toxic that hasn't missed a beat. I guess I am really lucky that this board doesn't have the artifact issue like the first. These 280x's have been a nightmare on several fronts, price gouging, artifacts, and fan issues.

Anyone seen this issue with fans on the 290/290x? I am thinking about picking up another card. I guess that I could get another 280x with a different replacement warranty.

@Klaian:

My Matrix R9 280x has been running without any fan issues for over 6 months now. This system has been up for weeks at a time without any issues (other than some initial BSOD which I think were driver related).

Can't believe that some less than $5 a piece fan can wreck such havoc for a product 😞 I hope that Asus can get this problem resolved for everyone.

this doesn't surprise me one bit, the lower fan on my 7970DCIIT has a shot bearing and ASUS's fix was to just send it back, they don't even want to accept the fact that the card itself is defective because it always crashes when running games unless you underclock it, was RMAed twice and had been on their shelves for a total RMA time of 4-5months. I just ended up replacing it with a reference sapphire 290X a few months back.

only reason OP got a response from a rep was because he has heaps of them.

And I was about to get a 280X...
Anybody having issues with the 290/290X?
I always bought ASUS's cards, but looks like this time I will get a Sapphire...

The problem is that owners of R9 Series may not even know that there is an issue with their fans until it`s too late. Funny is that it could happen the fan is failing later resulting in broken blades, like in 1, 2 years and in that moment Warranty will not cover it because its considered owner inducted defect :)))))

A failure Rate statistic would be nice to have on the whole R9 series!
Anyone else having fan with leaked, blocked, hardly spinning, dried out of lubricant, rattle or broken blades?
