Display Driver Has Stopped Responding then BSOD

Zulu0001

Radeon HD 7970-3GD5 (purchased a few minutes after the 7970 first went on sale)

I really like this video card and ASUS products in general...

I hope someone can help me, please..

Issue started back early August. Till that day I never had any issues. Never overclocked, use for iRacing Rig, WOT and 3D movies on my 27" Samsung monitor, using the display port and 120Hz.

I upgraded to the 13.4 driver, then a few days later the crashing began, usually when I was on the desktop.

The display would go Black, then return.

Error: Display Driver has stopped responding and has recovered.

After a few times of this I started getting BSOD.

Fix:

I removed the video card then did a fresh Windows 7 reinstall. Installed the ASUS MB drivers and all windows updates.

After the clean install I created an image using Clonezilla.

Then, I installed the video card and the 12.4 drivers.

Same thing with error and crashing.

After a few rebuilds using my clean image and various versions of the drivers I sent my card in under it's first RMA.

Service Case # NA2888342
RMA # USPC382285

I sent the card back in it's original box inside a second box.

I received the card in in an plain white box bubble wrapped (I did expect that)

What I didn't expect was that the mounting bracket was bent. (no big deal I straightened it)

I was really busy at work so I didn't get a chance to put it into my machine till late September.

Same problem as before I sent it in.

RMA # USPC392842

Got the card back

Put it in my freshly imaged machine and same error, black screen, BSOD

So now if figure there is no hope and I'm close to tossing it in the trash.....

Problem is I can't afford a new card right now so I dis-assembled my racing rig and put it in the attic...

I really don't want to send the card back again,

What I'd do is download GPU Tweak and use the update feature to see if a new VBIOS has been released for your particular GPU. 🙂

Unfortunately, Once I install the video driver the system crashes on the next one or two reboots.

I can't keep it running long enough to install the app.

Chino, I forgot to mention I did check for the latest VBIOS, using GPU Tweak, during post #6. It was the latest no updates available.

Are you getting the Catalyst drivers from Asus or AMD? Try using one of the older ones on the Asus website for your particular GPU and see if the problem persists.

Ok, I've downloaded driver V 9.02 and the GPU Tweak 2.2.01 from the ASUS site.

I have a fresh image of Win 7 PRO installed on my computer. Without the Video card machine runs great. No warnings or errors in the logs.

My Sig doesn't show that I have a Seasonic Platinum 80 Plus PSU

I installed the driver and GPU Tweak as noted above.

Machine sat for about an hour.

I installed World of Tanks and went to take a shower.

Came back WOT installed so I went into the game. Decided to install the monitor driver so I could get 120Hz.

Back at the desktop went to get a cup of coffee, before installing the driver. When I came back the screen was black.

I rebooted and nothing not even the ASUS Splash screen.

tried rebooting, nothing.

Took the card out and the computer is running fine on the MB video.

Looks like you are having a rough time.

Is it possible for you to test a different graphic card completely - a different AMD card or a nvid card in that PCIe slot? And have you tried to use different PCIe slots?
To help us help you - please provide as much information about your system and the problem as possible.

I don't have another card.

I haven't tried the other slot. I'll do that tomorrow morning.

Thanks

Wife's not ready so I popped the video card into the second slot and started up the machine.

Nothing not even the ASUS Splash Screen.

Am I correct in assuming that I don't need to activate the second slot no BIOS or jumper setting?
