ASUS UEFI vBIOS tool for Radeon 7000 series cards! It's Here!

X-ROG
Level 15
Hi Everyone,

The tool is finally here. Please find your Radeon card from this link: http://support.asus.com/download/ModelList.aspx?SLanguage=en&keyword=HD&type=1

This bit is critical:
* You will be UNABLE to flash back to the original legacy-only BIOS. HOWEVER, the new GOP UEFI BIOS is actually a Hybrid BIOS. It includes the legacy one as well as the UEFI one. But...
* We are only able to qualify its use ASUS motherboards: that includes those with UEFI BIOS' and those with older legacy BIOS' (we've checked on boards up to ~4 years ago). Other motherboards might work with our UEFI graphics cards but we cannot officially endorse compatibility as we don't have access to all BIOS and board revisions. The software checks if your motherboard is compatible.
* (If you intend to sell-on your card to fund a future upgrade, since you can't flash back, remember this decision affects the next person you sell to)

FAQ:

Do you need this GOP UEFI update?
If you want to use Win 8 Fast Boot, then yet, otherwise no. Do not upgrade if you don't need to. (If it works, don't fix it )

What factors do you need to get Win 8 Fast Boot running?
Only these motherboards listed below support Win 8 Fast Boot, due to a major, ground-up re-write to make the UEFI spec compatible with the Win function (this doesn't just affect ASUS motherboards FYI).

- All Intel 7 Series
- Upcoming Intel 8 Series
- Intel X79 Series updated to Win8 BIOS (3xxx)
- Intel H61 Series R2.0 or later
- All AMD R2.0 Series or later

THE SOFTWARE WILL CHECK IF YOUR BOARD IS COMPATIBLE.

Despite others being 'UEFI' boards (P67, Z68 etc) they are not compatible with Win 8 Fast Boot even after you update to GOP UEFI on your graphics card.

So, it's a Hybrid BIOS? Does that mean if I plan to upgrade my motherboard and OS to Win 8 later I can still update my GPU BIOS now?
As long as you own an ASUS board, sure. Upgrading the GPU now in preparation will still allow it to fall-back to legacy mode on your ASUS motherboard for the time being. You should see no change in the way it functions or performs. We still encourage the 'if it's not broke, don't fix it' though.

You will need:

Windows 8
UEFI compatible motherboard
GTX 600 or Radeon 7000 series graphics card
NOT OVERCLOCKED SYSTEM - DON'T RISK IT! Take normal BIOS flashing precautions.
If you run an CrossFire/SLI system, our advise is that you install 1 card at a time for this process.

Thanks for your patience everyone!

I get the error : "MB doesn't support UEFI". I have a sabtertooth 990FX gen R2.0 with the latest UEFI Bios already Installed. Why am I getting this error? My video card is The HD7970 DurectCU 2. The system is not overclocked at all.

Ok I got that fixed. However I get on error on Graphics Card "Download VBIOS Failure". I been trying over & over. Are the serves down? I was on wireless think it was a wireless network issues so I tried hard wire with same results.

heard from Asus that the hd7870 is not supported, and no time line when it will be supported.
i bought asus MB and GPU to make sure no compatibility issue with Win8, so much for that 😞
Anybody knows where if there is some uefi bios from other vendor for hd7870 that will work on the Asus board. after all they are almost identical hardware from AMD reference design, right ?

Any news on ASUS HD 7870 ?

I'm using UEFI updater 1.1.1.0 and it says "Download VBIOS failure!"

I have an ASUS M5A99X EVO R2.0 Motherboard.

.ROM Files
Would it not be possible to post some links to the .ROM files required to flash our GPUs with for Graphics Output Protocol?

I have an MSI MB and obviously the tool fails at the checking motherboard part, although at one point I managed to trick my mb into thinking I had GOP, that no longer seems to work. And now with 8.1's stupid Secure Boot watermark this update is all the more important.

+ On an unrelated note my ASUS UX32A has a Secure Boot watermark and no Secure boot option in BIOS, so I hope ASUS or Microsoft are able to fix this. IMO I think Microsoft should stop being childish and remove the watermark without asus even having to think about fixing this issue, but hey, what does 80% of Microsoft's main income matter?

I don't understand why ASUS can't just release a bios / firmware update to allow the UEFI / SecureBoot compatibility. The code is obviously already written. With the Windows 8.1 watermark issue it really is a pita! It seems other board manufacturers are doing this. It may seem like a minor incoveiance, but the watermark has me thinking of selling this card and buying a new one. If I do that, do you really think the next card I buy will be Asus? I doubt it.

So apparently this is a nice ASUS problem:

"Microsoft indicates that this is a known issue with a few ASUS PC models and recommends users to either turn on Secure Boot or try to configure it correctly from the BIOS menu of the computer."
http://news.softpedia.com/news/Windows-8-1-Error-Secure-Boot-Isn-t-Configured-Correctly-392801.shtml

Please help us ASUS.

Hi TL@ASUS,

Has there been any progress on releasing vbios images for people without whitelisted mainboards?

This situation is making ASUS look comparatively bad. Especially, given Windows 8.1's secure boot and the fact that so many of your competitors will simply email UEFI GOP compatible vbioses to interested parties.
